Applauding Outstanding Achievement
2008 CAPILANO DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDS
Since offering our first classes in 1968, Capilano has evolved into a vibrant institution
that has graduated thousands of diverse and outstanding alumni. From jazz musicians
and acclaimed artists to magazine editors and research scientists, more than 55iOoo
graduates make up our unique Capilano alumni family. Many former students have
become community leaders, esteemed professionals in their chosen fields> and inspiring
examples of the value of a Capilano education.
The Distinguished Alumni Awards were initiated in 2007 to honor those Capilano alumni
who have made significant contributions in their professions, within their communities,
and in their dedication to lifelong learning.
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary and our new university designation, we proudly
recognize the contributions our former students have made towards enriching the
Capilano environment, along with that of our global community.
This year, six extraordinary individuals were honored and their achievements celebrated
at a gala reception held on June 5 at the Capilano Golf and Country Club.
Profiles of this illustrious group follow.

RECIPIENT

Shannon Boase
Diploma in International Management, McRae Institute (Capilano), BBA, MBA
When Shannon Boase assumed her first position in Asia after graduation from Capilano's
McRae Institute of International Management, she didn't forget her Capilano roots.
Her internship with Price Waterhouse in Bangkok made her appreciate the difficulties
of adapting to a new culture, and while working in various leadership roles with Asian
companies, she enthusiastically helped McRae interns adjust to Asian business practices.
Dedicated to continuous learning. Shannon earned her MBA in Technology, Innovation
and Strategy in France and became proficient in the Thai language. She also gathered
the support of fellow McRae associates to fund a school to honour those who lost family
members in Thailand's 2004 tsunami.
While working in Malaysia, Shannon's allergies to the pollution from burning palm waste
led to the conception of Earthcycle Packaging Ltd., a company that produces sustainable
packaging products using palm fibre waste. Environmentalists applaud the establishment
of Earthcycle, as its products are completely compostable and become a healthy
contribution to soil.
In April 2008, Earthcycle was presented with a Dupont Award for Packaging Innovation,
selected from among 80 international entries. The company continues to win accolades for
its unique approach to environmental and sustainability challenges.

Barry Cartwright
Arts & Sciences (Capilano), BA, MA, PhD Candidate
Barry Cartwright truly exemplifies the definition of a master of all trades.
When he left Capilano in the early'70s with the highest CPA of any college student that
year to enter Simon Eraser University, his bachelor's degree in sociology led him to work
in international law. Over the years Barry has assisted thousands of individuals with their
immigration process to Canada.
He next embarked on a master's program in sociology and lived in Portugal, Taiwan, Korea
and Hong Kong, working for the legal immigration firm, Vick, McPhee & Liu. During this
period, Barry co-authored a book on Canadian immigration law and became a recognized
expert speaker at immigration and investment conferences worldwide.
At 52, Barry decided to pursue his PhD in C riminology at SFU, which he expects to compete
this year. Currently a lecturer in SFU's School of Criminology, he has designed several
courses and most of his classes have a waiting list.
A professional artist and musician, Barry continues to play rock music for various fundraisers
in the Vancouver area. He is indeed a Renaissance man!

Richard Davles
Diploma, Business Administration (Capilano); MBA
Richard Davies has spent his entire adult life working in the B .C. credit union system,
assuming virtually all positions from teller to Chief Executive Officer. Richard has been
CEO of Gulf & Eraser Financial Group, in its various incarnations through mergers and
acquisitions, for the past 17 years.
Under Richard's administration, the G&F Financial Group has grown from one branch and
seven employees to a 12-branch operation with more than 200 employees. In addition,
he has overseen the development of the credit union into a full service regional financial
institution through the introduction of commercial lending, credit cards and telephone and
internet banking.
A strong proponent of lifelong learning that began in Capilano's School of Business, Richard
later earned an MBA from Queen's University and numerous designations within the
financial services industry.
A married father of five children, Capilano benefited from Richard's financial expertise when
he served on the Capilano Board for six years, chairing the Finance and Audit committees.

Denise FIndlay
Retail Management Diploma (Capilano)
Denise Findlay, a member of the Squamish Nation, founded the personal and executive
coaching firm. Chameleon, in response to her interest in building bridges between
corporate and First Nations communities.

Chameleon is dedicated to catalyzing positive change in individuals and organizations,
specializing in personal and executive coaching, needs assessments, and customized
program development and training.
Denise earned a Retail Management diploma from Capilano in 1990 and was the first First
Nation's co-active coach to be certified by the International Coaches Federation. She enjoys
being a catalyst for change and a facilitator of growth and transformation, believing that
everyone has the ability to move towards positive transformation. Her work is attracting
international attention and she is asked to speak at conferences on a regular basis, especially
in the area of cultivating natural leadership abilities in individuals.

Whitney McMillan
Studio Art Diploma, Crafts Instructor Certificate (Capilano), BSW, MSW
Whitney McMillan's passion for volunteerism first began at Capilano. Initially completing
a Studio Art diploma and a Crafts Instructor certificate, she worked with residents at the
George Pearson Centre, facilitating residents to participate in artistic and recreational
activities.
Inspired to help people on a broader scale, she returned to Capilano to earn transfer credits
to enrol in the University of British Columbia's School of Social Work, where she earned a
BSW and an MSW. At Capilano, she volunteered with the Peer Mentor program, mentoring
students as they transitioned into school life.
Motivated to make a difference in the lives of people with health or disability issues, Whitney
focused her MSW on peer support.This led to a position at the Canadian Cancer Society, where
she oversaw the Society's Peer Support program across the Greater Vancouver region. During
Whitney's tenure, the Peer Volunteer team expanded from 40 to 80 volunteers and resulted in
the creation of the more wide-reaching and stronger program, CancerConnection. Whitney was
recently awarded the Canadian Cancer Society's Award of Excellence in Volunteer Management.

LisaTant
Retail Management Diploma (Capilano)
Lisa Tant will tell you that she kicked off her career in the fashion industry while studying
at Capilano.The Retail Management graduate approached a guest speaker after class,
and asked her about volunteering with her fashion marketing firm. She was hired on the
spot to research and write a trend forecasting newsletter for retailers and manufacturers
throughout North America.
From there, Lisa climbed up the fashion journalism ladder with stints at the Vancouver Sun
and Vancouver magazine before being appointed beauty editor for Chatelaine magazine.
She was promoted to Executive Editor at Chatelaine before being appointed Editor-in-Chief
of Flare magazine in 2004.
Lisa is recognized as one of Canada's leading beauty and fashion experts, appearing regularly
on Canadian radio and television shows. She is also a sought after speaker at local colleges
and universities, and continues to seek bright new talent for her magazine.
