Art students win scholarships Three Studio Art students have just been named as the recipients of scholarships offered by the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association. Pierre Bellehumeur and Kathy Curry, second year students, and Teresa McDowell, first year, have won scholarships of $200 and $250 which will be presented in October at the annual convention of the newspaper association. $7,000 in total is being awarded by the association this year to journalism and . graphic arts students from Camosun, Kwantlen, Selkirk and Capilano Colleges, U.Vic, and VCC. The BCYCNA has 81 member newspapers publishing once, twice or three times a week (including the North Shore News and several other papers in our College region). They are holding their convention from October 1 to 4 at the Delta River Inn. Reminder: The new Student Development Centre for Women's Access and Career Planning is inviting faculty members to come and see their facilities in M building on October 2 from 12 to 2 pm. Exhibit, lecture series on China "The Six Ancient Capitals of China" is an exhibition and lecture series being held this fall. The exhibition at the Chinese Cultural Centre runs from September 28 to October 31, while the lectures will be held at the Vancouver Centennial Museum Auditorium. Gibson gives seminar Bill Gibson is holding a special seminar for faculty, staff and students on "The Non-Electronic Method of Information Retrieval" on Monday, October 6 at 12:15 in room H424. He claims that the proposed system is “effective, simple, inexpensive and non-electronic" but “could be converted to an electronic system at any time." This sounds suspiciously like filing to us; nonetheless it is always useful to learn effective methods for remembering and retrieving articles, recipes, slides and other sorts of information. This is a free lecture and participants are invited to bring their lunch. Attention: opera buffs The Vancouver Opera Association is offering a special subscription discount to all faculty and staff members of B.C. colleges anduniversities. This latter is a documentary about the Casa Verdi, a shabby Milanese palace that was founded as a retirement home for opera stars by Verdi in 1902. Last chance for City Stage City Stage is closing. Anyone interested in seeing "Piaf" or Theatresports has until October 2 and October 18 respectively.
