Such was the case with Hilary Kampf-Captain, a former student of Capilano College who died at the age of 35 on September 13, 1995. “Hilary’s greatest joy in life was giving,” says his mother, Helga Captain. “He was always giving — of his time, his spirit, and with thoughtful gifts to family members and friends. Using his grandfather’s humility as an example, he combined the generous ideals of family and friends within himself.” Those ideals and Hilary’s generosity led to a legacy that will benefit countless numbers of people in the years to come. His final wish was that a bequest be made in his name to the Capilano College library. Today, only three months later, the library’s donor wall bears the inscription: “In loving memory of Hilary Kampf- Captain, 1960 - 1995, from the family Dorab, Helga and Karsten.” “‘We’re very honoured that Hilary felt so strongly about the library and that he wanted to make a lasting contribution,” says acting College librarian, Maureen Witney. “All bequests, such as the Captain’s, go directly towards books and benefit students for all time.” i
