Great Idea Raises Profile of Math Department n April 30, 23 junior and 22 senior high schools students came to Capilano College to participate in the British Columbia Colleges’ High School Mathematics Contest. They were selected on the basis of a multiple- choice preliminary round contest administered in their own schools. Students from Alpha, Britannia, Collingwood, Handsworth and Vancouver Technical wrote the final round tests; students i in grades 8, 9 and 10 wrote the junior paper and students in grades 11 and 12 wrote the senior paper. : ‘After greetings from Greg Lee, Ted Bentley and Rick Brewster, the students wrote their exams. During this time, the high school teachers who accompanied the students met with members of the College’s Mathematics and Statistics department to discuss issues of common interest, particularly the new high school mathematics applied stream. __ _ After completing the two-hour examinations, the students enjoyed lunch and campus tours while the marking teams graded the exams. The afternoon consisted of talks given by Rick and Ted, plus award presentations to the top three students in both junior and senior categories. The top junior award was presented to Frank Gung of Van Tech and the top senior award to Alan Chow of Alpha. Alan impressed us earlier in the day with an impromptu performance of a Beethoven piano sonata. The Mathematics and Statistics department thanks John Brooks for his assistance in the campus tours and Addison-Wesley for its generosity in providing T182 graphics calculators as prizes for the top student in each category. While the entire Math department contributed to the success of the event, special acknowledgement must be given to Rick for his great leadership in initiating this competition at the College. —Submitted by Wendy Lynn PEOPLE ernardo Berdichewsky, Anthropology instructor at Capilano College, has been busy over the past year participating in racism awareness seminars.
