Jay hawks. The Gram Parsons revival is NOW ON! "Could've Been Me" - Billy Ray Cyrus. The Boston revival is NOW ON! "Barfly" - Superstar. Joe McAlinden, who used to be in Glasgow's Groovy Little Numbers and is big pals with Eugenius and Teenage Fanclub, is smarter than all his friends. "My Legendary Girlfriend" - Pulp. I like the two and a half minutes of heavy breathing before the song starts. "Underwhelmed" - Sloan. I like the fact that one of its bridges is "I Attend Mine," but great college rock should never be about college. And the album version's the best one. "Baby-Baby-Baby" by TLC and "Close the Door" by Betty Boo. These songs make me wet. "I Don't Care" - A House. The list song of the year! "C is the Heavenly Option" - Heavenly. The skiff le revival is NOW ON! "Not Over You" - Basehead. And Arrested Development suck. A Man," the Swirlies' "Chris R.," Unrest's "Isabel (remix)," Honeybunch's "Mine Your Own Business," Sophie B. Hawkins' "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover," Dixie's Death Pool's "Golden Pain of Desire," Because's "Her Rhythm and Her Blues," the Moles' "What's the New Mary Jane?," En Vogue's "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and the Jesus Lizard's "Rope." I missed a lot of songs, most notably Boyz II Men's "End of the Road," which had the longest stay at #1 on the American charts since "Don't Be Cruel." I still can't remember what it sounds like. I forgot to put any grunge songs on but there's a song by Kyuss that mentions Satan so I think that's my favourite. Overall, I think Right Said Fred said it best when they sang, "Half the world blows and half the world sucks." Patti Heidinger Chooses Her Choice Jules Shear - The Great Puzzle REM - Automatic For The People Lucinda Williams - Sweet Old World T-Bone Burnett - Criminal Under My Own Hat Rembrandts - Rembrandts Peter Himmelman - Flown This Acid World Jason Anderson will change his mind about everything below this in about one week's time ... I bought a lot of albums (got even more for free!) but I want to talk about songs that each had a very special meaning in my life. Patti is the Manager of Music World downtown "Stull" - URGE Overkill. A Satanic revision of Van Halen's "Dance the Night Away" (or David Lee Roth's "Goin' Crazy"). "My Drug Buddy" - the Lemonheads. From the college rock Rubber Soul. Live, the weasely Australian sings Juliana Hatfield's part in a bad falsetto. "Jump" - Kriss Kross. Best rap single since "O.P.P.," which means that it marked the end of a three month slump. But the Boys made a better album. "A Love for All Seasons" - Right Said Fred. This song was playing in the background while I was being frisked following my first arrest. Concealed weapons? NO-SIR! "Weird Gear" - Ultramarine. Takes the lyrics from Kevin Ayers' "There Is Loving Amongst Us There ls.Loving"which is pretty groovy but this is easier to dance to. "Deeper and Deeper" - Madonna. The cassette single is cheaper than the book and the pages don't fall out as easily. "No Life Singed Her" - Pavement. Dean Wareham of Luna2 says that Pavement sound like the Swell Maps. Did anyone else hear the Swell Maps? "Crowded in the Wings" by the Jayhawks, or, "Good Fortune" by Joe Henry with the Jordan Kawchuk Takes Ten Jazz, rock, blues, wedding favourites, copshow themes ... it's all the same as long as it gives you goose bumps. These are a few things (in no particular order) to put on the mantelpiece in between the curling trophies and glass poodles: Canadian jazz saxophonist does it again, this time in Cuba with a collection of user-friendly Latin music- her solos honk without a doubt.) 7. Tom Waits - Bone Machine (Perfectly twisted and beautiful. This is music held upto a fun house mirror.) 8. Ronny Jordan - Antidote (Hip-hoppy jazz. Somehow this guitar player pulls it off. Not many have tried to without sounding like either Miles Davis or a big chump.) 9. XTC - Nonsuch (Andy Partridge is one of the best songwriters around right now. It's just too bad he has to share half the recording with Colin Moulding.) 10. Big Turk chocolate bars (It was fun at first, but now it's getting out of control. They taste like nothing else in this world.) Caetano Veloso - Circulado (World music that doesn't sound like the players just discovered the magical "electric keyboard." Arto Lindsey's production brings this Brazilian legend back.) 2. David Byrne - Uh Oh (Once he accepted that he was incapable of becoming Jose Brazil, his writing and arranging came together. In concert, the horn section had me up against the back wall.) 3. The Calgary Jazz Festival (With all the acts from around the world put in smaller clubs, this year's was the best I can remember. No clockwatching.) 4. Buffalo Tom - Let Me Come Over (Yeah sure, I was a little late in catching on, but the amount I play this one will make up for it.) 5. Big Joe Turner (With every re-issue and old album I dig up, I realise I was born about four decades too late.) 6.
