@nformer Award winner knows the meaning of risk apilano College Graphic Design and Illustration student, Dominique Fulton, is this year’s winner of the Paul Gallagher Scholarship for Excellence award, presented at the spring 2000 student awards night on March 28. The scholarship honours Paul Gallagher, who was principal of Capilano College from 1977 to 1985. It was established by the College board and is presented to a College student who has achieved excellent academic standing with a minimum 3.5 GPA. “This was my first time participating in the selection process,” says College Foundation executive director, Lana Robinson. “There were 19 applicants and six finalists, all of whom were outstanding. But, even amongst that group, Dominique was the unanimous choice of the committee. “For me personally,” Lana adds, “this is why I’m here. Seeing the achievements of the remarkable finalists makes me feel renewed.” Along with a current GPA of 3.87, Dominique also has a BA with a Physical Geography major from Simon Fraser University, is a volunteer with the Artists for Kids program, and coaches field hockey. In fact, she attended SFU on an athletic scholarship for field hockey. “After 10 years of wandering, I have finally found what makes me happy,” she says. “All through high school I was torn between fine art and my love of the outdoors.” The 1991 Carson Graham grad’s decision to study Geography at university was solidified when she received the Archie MacPherson Dean’s Honours Scholarship in Geography. However, after completing her degree and several cooperative education work terms, Dominique realized that she was not finding the work rewarding. Technical drawings done as part of her Archaeology minor led her to illustrate the first comprehensive archaeology textbook published in post-apartheid South Africa. It will be used in South African universities. She loved the work and made the difficult decision to abandon her chosen career path and return to college. “After researching different graphic design schools across Canada, I applied for Capilano College’s Graphic Design and Illustration program,” she explains. “T really liked the instructors, who are all working designers, and I liked the fact that the program also had an illustration component. I also got great reviews of Capilano College by talking Dominique Fulton receives the Paul Gallagher Scholarship for Excellence from the man himself, former College principal, Paul Gallagher. After graduation, Dominique is considering opening an art school on the Sunshine Coast. “I like living in smaller communities and feel that . . . there is a very viable space for an art centre to develop. I would also like to continue doing freelance illustration and design work.” @ @ Capilano @€em College Vol. XXII No. 4 April 21/00
