Capilano College Students Winners in B.C. Business Competition ive students from Capilano College’s Accelerated Marketing Program took home three first place prizes in the annual B.C. Business Computing Simulation competition. The competition involved 12 teams from colleges and institutes from around the province. It was held March 9 to 11 at the Richmond Executive Inn and was judged by a distinguished panel comprised of top executives from ICBC, BC Hydro, Deloitte and Touche and the Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour. Each team was required to run a corporation that sells computers. They all started with the same amount of money and the same number of employees. They were judged for their six-year strategic plan on how to operate their company and increase the value of the company’s stock. The judges, acting as the Board of Directors, would give the teams only minutes to appear before them and account for decisions made in such areas as human resources, marketing, or how they may have reacted to environmental variables. Teams were judged as a whole, as well as for individual positions held by members of their corporation. Members of the Capilano College team, coached by instructor Graham Fane, took home the prize for best team in their industry. Steve Webster won for best marketing manager. Karen Schuppli won for best human resources manager. Nora Spring and Kim Arnott filled the positions of CEO and director of Finance. Andrew Giffin worked with the team putting together the strategic plan and also acted as an alternate player, able to fill any position should another member be unable to participate. “Tt was really intense,” Webster said, adding, “it was like taking an extra course. But we felt really good once it was over. It showed us how well we could work under pressure and how adaptable we are.” Prizes for the winners included software packages, mini computer notebooks, portfolio briefcases, as well as cash. They were donated by various sponsors, which included Microsoft Canada Inc., Novell Canada, Seanex Technologies, Doppler Computers, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of B.C., the April 21/95 Instructor Graham Fane (left) and his Accelerated Marketing students accept an award from College President Dr. Greg Lee at a banquet held in their honour earlier this month. Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour, and the American Marketing Association. The colleges also made donations towards the awards. The teams were monitored by game administrators, which also included two Capilano College students: Al Hyland and David Begoray. Both are enrolled in the College’s Accelerated Marketing Program. “We used everything they taught us at college,” Webster added. “Every course we’ve taken; everything we’ve learned. “We had a good year. We excelled!” O
