As a venue community for two Olympic events, the District of West Vancouver believes that the
2010 Winter Games will provide our community with opportunities for tourism, sport, education,
arts and cultural activities, recreation, investment, and community benefit, before, during, and
after this major worldwide event. Council established the West Vancouver 2010
Olympic/Paralympic Select Committee in the fall of 2003 to identify how to best maximize these
benefits for our community and also examine potential challenges related to the 2010 Games.
To achieve this mandate, the Committee has been listening to residents and a variety of
organizations and providing information throughout 2004 and early 2005. This was
accomplished by attending a variety of organizations' and committees' meetings, participating in
Community Day, the Harmony Arts and the Coho Festivals, as well as providing residents with
opportunity for input via a community focus group to hear all 2010 related thoughts and
suggestions on potential opportunities and concerns for West Vancouver.
As per their mandate and prior to their term ending on June 30^^ the Committee presented their
recommendations in a report to Council on Monday, May 30*^. Council was very appreciative of
the Committee's work to date and unanimously endorsed the recommendations presented in
the Council Report. For your information, we have enclosed the Committee's recent Report to
Council, as well as including a copy of a more informal colour brochure, which will be distributed
throughout the community in the coming months.
While this Committee's work is now complete, our community's planning for the coming Games
has just begun. The coming year will see West Vancouver proceed to determine the scope and
requirements of the Committee's recommendations and continue to prepare for the 2010
