Hugh Fraser's composition is the foundation of"Popping the Quiff' .He is an internationally recognized jazz musician, composer, producer and teacher. His recent discography include In the Mean Time (Jazz Focus Records/1997), • Screab-Bop & Strings (Boathouse Records/1996) both with The Hugh Fraser Quintet. He has been guest soloist on recordings such as Irakere (Bembe Records/ 1997) and Perspectiva (Egam Records, Cuba, 1996). He has taught, composed and produced at the Royal Academy of Music (London, England) as Head of Jazz Composition, at the Banff Centre of Fine Arts (Canada) as Program Head of Jazz and at the University of Ulster (Ireland) as Head of the Summer Jazz Workshop. Brad Muirhead has been working with Hugh Fraser, as assistant composer and conductor of Four into One, the music for Popping the Quiff. Brad's musical training includes the Banff Centre for the Arts Jazz Intensive Workshops and extensive private studies with such notables as Howard Johnson (New York) and Jlggs Whigham (Berlin). He composes and plays trombone, tuba and euphonium. Playing professionally since 1980, he is an original member of Hugh Fraser's Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation and John Korsrud's Hard Rubber Orchestra. He has performed with The Now Orchestra, Claude Ranger's jade Orchestra and the Miles Black Sextet. Brad will be playing the tuba, one of the air elements in"Popping the Quiff'. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now." Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe is a Vancouver based musician who graduated from U.B.C.with a Music Degree in 1977. He's played professionally with both Latin and Jazz orchestras, such asShango Ashe, Alma Libre and in jazz, withDaryl Jahnke. He's also played for the Vancouver Symphony, Vancouver Opera, andthe Arts Club . He's popp'n on percussion as one of the earth elements. Bill Clark plays trumpet for us as one of the fire elements for Popping the Quiff. A founding member of Hugh Fraser's award winning big band, "Veji", he's toured Canada and recorded 3 CDs. His own hard driving ensemble, the Bill Clark Sextet, has played at all the major Canadian Jazz Festivals. Their 1985 performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival still airs regularly on Bravo Network's Great Canadian Jazz Series. Currently Bill composes and plays with the highly ecclectic Vancouver quartet Talking Picturess He has recorded 2 CDs and toured both Canada and Europe with them. Miles Black lives in Port Alberni and plays jazz with Chuck lsreal's Band and Skywalk. As the other air element in Popping the Quiff, he's playing synthesizer. Coat Cooke is a player/composer and producer based in Vancouver. Check out his band's latest CD, "The Now Orchestra with Rene Cussier" on Victo Records. He'll be playing flute. Mike Braverman is on saxaphone. His sound is one of the water elements. Jack Duncan is the founder/ Artistic Director of Shango Ashe. He has travelled extensively studying with some of the world's greatest master drummers. He has lent his talents to numerous groups, appearing on several albums and performing at all of the major Jazz and folk festivals in Canada. He was also a guest performer at the 1993 Havana Jazz Festival. Karl Ronan has played professionally, since the age of 16 ..working with international artists like, Shirley Bassey and Mary Black. He been performing, recording and touring with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland He,s been lead trombone for touring shows such as Chess, Barnum, Guys and Dolls, Hot Shoe Suffle and JKF: the Musical Drama. as well as being a part of groups like the Irish Jazz Orchestra (under Hugh Fraser). He is a professional Music Copyist and teaches Brass at Newpark Music Centre, Dublin. He currently plays with the AfroCuban group Saoco, and Ronan Guilfoyle's modem jazz quintet Devsirme. Tonight he'll heat up our imaginations with his trombone. Shirley Bear Wabnagu Nation, Eastern Canada. MINDS TRAVEL TIME~ ,,S,PAci( Denise Lonewalker as a solo dancer and one of the First Nations drummers in this performance, she draws on her rich heritage of Nishka-na-wee-wia/Hopl-Apache-Mi'Kmaq ancestry. She was the first native woman to graduate with honours, from the National Ballet School. She performed for 11years with the National Ballet Company and with the New York City Ballet under direction of George Ballanchine. Her most recent performances include GAWA GYANI (Karen Jamieson Dance Co.) Japan, Dry Lips Ought.a Move To Kapuskasing, by Tomson Highway (the Arts Club)Vancouver, B.C. and Tribute to Anna Mae Aquash, her own choreography and script (the Women in View Festival)Vancouver, B.C. ANCFSTORS MOVING THROUGH SPA9E > ANCIENT ANCIENT ANCTENT MINDS TRAVELTIME SPACE FROM TIME, SPACE. THROUGH TIME, SPACE MERGE ANCIENT REALITY Katari Taiko was the first taiko group to form in Canada. It continues to operate as a collective and has been making taiko music and helping establish other groups across the country since 1979. Currently there are twelve members, all with divers backgrounds and professions. Lynda Nakashima ls one of the new recruits recently joining Katari Taiko. She went to the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and now works as a location artist for video games. She will be playing on a Japanese fan drum. Vivien Nishi has been drumming with Katari Taiko for six years. She has a strong Interest in the visual arts, and works as a freelance set designer in film and television. She will be playing on a fan drum as well. Jay Hirabayashi and Barbara Bourget are among the main influences inspiring Popping the Quiff. They are the choreographers for this performance. In 1982 Barbara and Jay, Peter Bingham, Aimed Hassan, Lola Maclaughlin, Jennifer • Mascall and Peter Ryan, established EDAM (Experimental Dance and Music). Then in 1986 Jay and Barbara formed Kokoro Dance. As both the artistic directors and choreographers of Kokoro Dance, their extensive background in butoh dance and western modem dance gives the company its unique hybrid style. Their butoh training includes teachers such as Kazuo Ohno, Natsu Nakajima, Koichl and .Kiroko Tomano, and Minoru Hideshima. Barbara trained with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and performed with Les Grands Ballet Canadiens. Kokoro Dance fuses the aesthetics of Japanese butoh dance with western dance techniques. In the past 10 years they have created 15 major works: Rage, Episode in Blue, Zero to the Power, Aconk Sunyat.a, Bats, Esse, The Betrothal, Encounters with the Goddess, Ascension, Dance of the Dead and many more. All of these have incorporated live music. In 1991, the company was featured on CBC's Adrienne Clarkson Presents, n a program that subsequently won an industry Gemini award and an American Film and Vldeo Festival gold medal. Kokoro Dance has performed in over 200 schools and in festivals such as Canada Dance Fesdval, Ottawa, du Maurier lnternadonal Jazz Festival ,Vancouver, Vancouver International Children's Festival and the Sound Symposium in Saint Johns. They are known for their many collaborations with outstanding artist in other disciplines and for their public performances at Wreck Beach, Vancouver's Downtown East Side, the business district at Robson Square and at Christ Church Cathedral for the World AIDS Conference. Sheena Anderson Thomas Anfleld Ingmar Bergsma Barbara Bourget An the a Browne Ana Carrasco Soressa Gardner Jay Hirabayashi Eve Lacabanne Paula Urrutia Michael Whitfield Bill Thomson is a member of Avenue for the Arts, a local artist run society, known for its community based exhibitions such as the Doll Show '97 and the Frame Show '94. Known for his work in collage and assemblage using found objects, he's been making "objects" on the side since 1986. His work has been exhibited in Canada, U.S.A., and Mexico. In recent years he's been focusing on community cultural development. Ray Fuse is a multi media artist/ritual performer who also works in video production, and dance. He combines multiple art forms in his videos and music performances. His most recent performance was Popping the Pearl (August 9th, 1997) at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Peter Graham received a Fine Arts Degree from the University of Manitoba, School of Fine Arts in 1965. He is a playwright, composer, poet, sculptor and painter. He has exhibited his work and per-formed since 1965 and is presently working towards a major exhibition at the Delta Arts Council Gallery in Ladner (November 1997). He's also a freelance arts instructor in the Lower Mainland. Danielle Hadland is 9 years old. Having painted since she was one, she considers herself an artist. Danielle is presently working on a large mural with her grandfather, John Martin. Charlene Vickers hails from Kenora, Ontario. She moved to Vancouver 7 years ago. She has her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and is presently working on a Bachelor of Arts in Critical Studies at S.F.U. She is a painter. Stefan Hoflin is 7 years old. As a visual artist he works in creating installations. His best known work, "the Living Room" was exhibited at Second Beach/ Stanley Park in Vancouver, for a special event sponsored by the Salon de Refuses, (1996). Besides art, he likes soccer and jazz. Dolleen Manning recently completed her Master's in Fine Arts at S.F.U. She works in mixed media installations, focussing on issues of importance to First Nations peoples. Her most recent work was part of a two person show called External Recall (Burnaby Art Gallery). J olan ta Pyra is an artist, actress and singer. She has performed at the Charlettown '.esdval, starred in her own vehicle, After Marlene as well as Sincerely Yours, Vera Lynn ,Minotaur and Ramona and the White Slaves As a singer she has performed in Canada, U.S.A. and Japan. , Linda Siemens Is a ceramacist who received her formal training at the Fraser Valley College. She describes her work as mostly functional pottery.Whenever she wants to treat herself, she creates elaborate, figurative pieces that stretch the functional aspect of her earthen ware." Naomi Steinberg's main artistic interests are in Community Theatre such as La Bete (Jericho Art Centre, Vancouver, B.C.,1994) and in dance as a form of self expression. Rec~ntly she has extended her interest into fundraising and systems production, her latest fundra1ser "Expression" and (after the party)"Express" ,was for Ars Mundi. • Maria Wilkinson began her arts career in 1994. She brings to her work an extensive history working in social and community services as a counsellor and workshop facilitator/teacher and program coordinator since 1989. Emma Waddell is 10 years old. Having trained in Highland Dance and Irish Dance for several years, Emma competes at regular feis (competitive Irish Dance Gatherings). She has won several awards in both solo and group competitions. She is presently with the Stewart School of Irish Dancing Association in Maple Ridge, B.C. Sarah Tucker is 13 years old. She played the part of "Ditty" in Tar Tracks (1995) and acted in Deep Space ( 1996) and in a James Bond Spoof ( 1996). Recent gigs include sigi~gin in a choral concert. Her hobbies include writing poetry and short stories and play the clan net. Randy Wood's style of painting ranges from representational, figurative sculptures to abstract flights of the imagination. He is a founding member of the Salon de Refuses. His work has been exhibited in the Sexuality Art Show, a charity auction raising money towards A.I.D.S awareness. II Tom Bowen will be documenting the peformance for us. He is presently working as a freelance photographer in Vancouver. His special interest is black and white photography and the nude figure. He won the Silver and B.C. Newspaper Award for an editorial photograph for Xtra West Newspaper (1997). Bowen's photographs have been published in both art and editorial magazines. Daniel Rio Lake is our other photographer for this project. He is a local photographer specializing in Fine Art, black and white portraiture. His most recent project was "Hastings Street Portraits in Gloss" where he photographed street people for a Serbian painter who likened Hastings Street to Bosnia. Gerald King is the Llghting Consultant for Kokoro Dance. He has designed their lighting since 1988. Based In Vancouver, Gerald started out with Studio 58. Since then, he has worked with the Vancouver Playhouse, Ballet B. C., Manitoba Opera and Saskatchewan Opera and Karen Jamieson Dance plus many others. His designs have received 8 Jessie Awards. Wade Thomas is our freelance lighting technician who is among the few people familiar with the eccentric lighting system from the Helen Pitt Gallery. He went to school at Emily Carr Institute for Art and Design. As an artist, he works in installations, audio and radio. He moved here from Calgary, 5 years ago. Jason Boch er graduated from Douglas College. He works as Production Assistant for the Vancouver Opera. Michel D. Bisson is the Production Coordinator for Kokoro Dance. Cease Wyss is the videographer documenting the performance. Cease is with Video In. Ohan is the building supervisor on duty helping us at the Roundhouse Community Centre. The Alliance of Pacific Visual Artists was Incorporated as a non profit society in October of 1996. It is a provincial artist run organization whose board is made up of one member from each of the 13 chapters. We presently have over 120 members and partner up with a variety of groups in the province. In our short history we have launched a province wide touring exhibition called DlsCover, a look at the CD side of the Visual Arts, sponsored the distribution of a provincial survey of alternative venues for artists in the province and of course our biggest one yet, Popping the Qplff. She is especially known for the many projects she has coordinated alone or in partnership with others; projects likeDisCover using recycled CD cases (1997), A CD Look at the International Jazz Orchestn1 Workshop, documenting 3 years of the workshops, in collaboration with Hugh Fraser and Blue Shift, an internet project combining art and science Designed and coordinated by Henry Tsang it was produced by Cindi, Derek Masselink and Sue Northcott, (Science Department of the University of the Okanagan & B.C. Festival of the Arts). Haruko Okano is a founding member of the Alliance of Pacific Visual Artists.She is a freelance arts administrator/fundraiser and arts advocate.
