Grabbing a better bite Food is always an interesting topic of discussion, and since March is National Nutrition Month, this is a good time to start talking about it. Beaver Foods is putting on a nutrition awareness program which will emphasize that you can eat healthily while on the run. They've put together featured food combinations which should be both fun to eat and contain all the nutrients and calories needed. ESL: Active and Involved The people in the English as a Second Lan- guage department are doing a_ lot of good work, and we aren't just talking about their teaching. For instance, Joan Acosta edits a newspaper for immigrants called Canada and You which contains historical, geographical and citizenship information, and is circulated to colleges and school boards in the Lower Mainland. This news- paper has been lauded by such prominent critics as the UBC Department of Education and Paul Gallagher. Joan is also the edi- tor of the TEAL (Teachers of English as an Additional Language) news bulletin called Bright Ideas -- a collection of teaching suggestions which members send in. Speak- ing of TEAL, they are having their confer- ence in the first week of April at the Sheraton Hotel downtown. TEAL is growing rapidly, and this year they expect over 1000 teachers and other professionals, as well as visitors from the United Kingdom, Toronto and other parts of B.C. The Pres- ident of TEAL is our very own Nick Collins and he has been busy organizing activities for the conference. Also from our ESL de- partment and working very hard on this conference are Laura Renes, Vice President of TEAL, and Marlene Fry, Membership Sec- retary. At this rate the conference can't miss.
