March 21/97 FACULTY DEVELOPMENT David Jones Committee Chair As the term winds down, and you anticipate getting through all those end-of-term projects, cast your thoughts to some May happenings that are guaranteed to restore your energies. Faculty Development Days (May 12-16) A more detailed brochure description of the May workshops will be circulated to you in the next week or two. In the meantime, here’s a brief outline to consider in your PD planning: May 12 - Computers for Absolute Beginners; Prior Learning Assessment: Introduction, overview, and implementation May 13 - Teaching and Managing the Multicultural Classroom; Conflict Resolution: Case studies in dealing with colleague-to-colleague conflict, student anger, and multicultural differences. May 14 - Educational Technology in Action: Demonstrations of on-line courses, creating effective multimedia for education, use of videoconferencing; Teaching Techniques that Work; Fast Forward Media Showcase (May 14 & 15). May 15 - Outcomes Based Learning: Trends, changes, curriculum and course design; Internet I: The new look of information - demos of the latest in research resources; Internet IT (hands-on): Riding the wave - using advanced features of Internet search engines. May 16 - Coordinators’ Orientation and Training Off Campus May Events The News Bulletin from the Centre for Curriculum, Transfer and Technology (CCTT) lists numerous upcoming PD events. Here are a few of the May/June events: e Chairs Development Institute. May 12-15, Bowen Island. Have heard good reports about this event from past participants. For chairs, convenors and current and future coordinators. e Two events, both on May 17-18 in Seattle: “Critical Thinking and the Redesign of Instruction,” and “Critical Thinking and the Process of Assessment” e Association of International Educators’ Annual Conference. May 20-23, Vancouver. e BC Educators Users Groups Workshop on Educational Technology. May 29-30 at SFU. Training Opportunities * CCTT is coordinating a nine-hour facilitator development event (Friday pm April 18 and Sat. April 19) for those interested in using the resource materials for Refitting the Classroom (“for instructors who work with women students in traditionally male programs”). *The Annual Great Teaching Seminar is being held in Naramata from June 8-10. Application forms are being sent to Divisional Assistants in your area, so check with them. * The Intercultural Communication Institute in Portland, Or. is offering a number of 3, 4, and 5-day Workshops at their Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication. Computer Workshop You remember those computer workshops you signed up for back in December? There’s still one left - the Powerpoint workshop is scheduled for April 4 from 10:30-5 in CE237.
