April 24: Decision made that Capilano would pursue regional university designation. Regional university steering committee formed. Includes: Dr. Greg Lee, Catherine Vertesi, Jim Cooke, Dr. Jackie Snodgrass, Shelley Kean and David DeMuynck. WhiteWater Communications retained to assist in campaign efforts. Principal is Robin Wilson, former Capilano board chair. Key messages and key discussion points regarding Capilano’s pursuit of regional university designation are created and distributed to Capilano’s Executive Group. April 25: Members of Executive Group asked to gather support from a regional university internal and external contacts, including First Nations communities, chambers of commerce, elected officials, business leaders, etc. Generic letter of support produced; adapted version sent to key members in Capilano’s region, asking for their endorsement. April 27: Steering committee meets with Katherine Whittred, MLA for North Vancouver-Lonsdale. Media release sent out declaring Capilano pursuing regional university designation. Greg Lee, Catherine Vertesi and Jim Cooke meet with the editorial board at the Vancouver Sun April 28: Wake up ad appears in Vancouver Sun and published in the North Shore News, Squamish Chief, Whistler Question and Coast Reporter the following week. May 1: Committee of the whole of Capilano board of governors discusses and prepares a motion supporting the initiative to designate Capilano as a regional university. May 2: Advanced Education minister, Murray Coell, sends an e-mail to all college presidents advising that there will be no change at this time to colleges’ degree-granting abilities. A wordmark (Capilano: all about U} is produced by Marketing and Communications, to be used as a logo replacement on all campaign materials and on other Capilano materials. May 5: Distinguished alumni award recipient ad appears in Vancouver Sun and published in the North Shore News, Squamish Chief, Whistler Question and Coast Reporter the following week. May 7: Media release sent out saying that Capilano’s retention of degree-granting status is good news for students. May 8: Case statement for Advanced Ed minister prepared. Buttons and t-shirts produced with the new wordmark. May 9: Steering committee, Capilano’s board chair, Linda Robertson, and all MLAs from Capilano’s region meet with Murray Coell in Victoria. Meeting is encouraging and the minister requests a proposal from Capilano in regards to its seeking university college/regional university designation. May 25: A summary of a proposal being prepared regarding the case to become a university college/ regional university is sent to the minister of Advanced Education. The proposal should be ready by the end of June. May 30: Regional University News website is created and can be accessed from Frontlines.
