Capilano College’s Sechelt campus plans expansion

apilano College’s application for

funding from B.C.’s Ministry of
Advanced Education, Training and
Technology to enlarge its Sechelt
campus will see the existing facility
nearly double in size in the new year.

If approved, the project work will

include an addition to the present Inlet
Avenue building plus renovations and
code upgrading in the existing space.
Four additional classrooms are
planned, plus an enlarged library and
additional office space. New and
renovated classrooms will increase the
Sechelt campus student station

capacity to 182 from 69.
“Our program offerings and services
have outgrown the existing facility,

which was opened in 1988,” says College

president, Dr. Greg Lee. “The requested
expansion and renovation will help us
meet the region’s increasing educational
demand and needs. It will also improve
our capacity to offer more quality post
secondary programs and services to our
communities on the Sunshine Coast.”
The increase in student capacity will

enable the College to consolidate most of

its programs and offerings at the Inlet
Avenue campus where support services

and other facilities enhance the
learning experience. It will also allow
the College to expand program
offerings into new areas, such as the
Applied Conservation Biology
program, which is currently under
development.

If government funding is received
in time, construction will be carried
out between April and September
2001. During that period, the Inlet
Avenue facility will be completely
closed and College information and
registration services relocated to
another Sechelt facility.
