Student awarded Art scholarship Art Institute student Joan Smith has just won a major scholarship which will go a long way towards covering her The $1250 Senior Award was given to her by the B.C. Cultural Fund. Joan attributes a great deal of her success to the support and encouragement of her instructor, Wayne Eastcott, and she has many positive things to say about Capilano College. "Capilano has been a great resource for me," she said. "Over the years I was able to acquire the studio skills and academic pre-requisites which allowed me to enter UBC's Fine Arts program and graduate with a BFA degree. I am very appreciative that the accessibility” offered by the community college system, allowed me to obtain a very good education both at the college and beyond." She also describes the Art Institute program as "a supportive, stimulating environment where the :participating artists have access to ongoing guidance, excellent facilities, and an exciting exchange of ideas." Of her own printmaking work, Joan says "I intend to make large prints comparable to the scale of paintings and creating the same impact— containing imagery of a basic nature, using both natural phenomena and manipulated textures that make references to the fundamental aspects of the world around us; the Universal, the Primordial, the Fundamental."
