Dealing with Potential Suicides It is the duty of all of us at Capilano to act “reasonably” when faced with a potential suicide situation. That is, we must take all reasonable steps to assist the student when we become aware of the situtation. The following steps are advised: * Contact the Counselling Department and/or the duty physician. These are professionals trained to deal with such circumstances. * If off campus, (you receive a telephone call from a student, for example), encourage the student to contact SAFER (879- 9251) or the Crisis Centre (733-4111), or contact one of these agencies yourself. - If on campus, remain with the student during the crisis and do not abandon him/her until professional help or advice is received. Lock it or Lose It Prevent theft from motor vehicles. Lock your gas cap. If you don’t have a locking gas cap, get one! North Vancouver R.C.M.P. Cap Planning High-Tech Art Show Capilano College and Visions Art Canada are initiating a major exhibition of Canadian high tech art and have hired Ted Lindberg (former curator at Vancouver Art Gallery) to research the project. Lindberg, who began his three-month contract with the College last week, is already looking for potential artists for the show. “Body Electric: High-Tech Infusions in Canadian Art” (a proposed title) will focus on art using high-tech media. “High tech is anything in the enhanced sciences,” says Lindberg. “It could be physics, chemistry, or biology for all I know—plastics are a high-tech material.” Lindberg sees the exhibit as a meeting point for pure art and pure science. “Most art and science we see in everyday life is applied — I am looking for the more poetic qualities of pure art and pure science; I believe they form a curve at their highest levels and double back on each other.” Lindberg expects to approach both arts and science funding organizations to help mount the show once he has established a list of potential participating artists and written a concept paper (by the end of June). The show is tentatively planned for travel across Canada then to Europe and eventually Japan. A freelance arts writer and administrator, Ted was director of the Charles H. Scott Gallery at Emily Carr, and curator at the Burnaby Art Gallery. His most recent show, “North of the Border: Contemporary Vancouver Art”, is on now at the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham. Keitha Fishwick, vocal student in the Bachelor of Music Transfer Program, wowed the judges recently at the Coquitlam District Music Festival. Keith won three first places in vocal solo, Gilbert and Sullivan and Duet competitons. Keitha is another feather in the cap of voice instructor Arlene Mcintyre, whose reputation as a vocal teacher makes her much in demand as an adjudicator; she leaves for Nanaimo in April to adjudicate the Island Music Festival. (Another of Arlene's students Adele Clark won raves as star of the UBC Sweeny Todd production.)
