Conference Navigating the 90s, the Adult Special Education Conference held in February was a smashing success. Speaking to nearly 300, Rick Hansen shared with us the initial trauma of his disability. He spoke of his efforts and final success in overcoming personal and educational barriers which recently culminated in the creation of a Disability Centre at UBC, from which Rick hopes to provide access and awareness for disabled students at UBC and in the community. Workshop leaders offered assessments, counselling, and integration strategies as part of the post-secondary movement toward heightening the educational experiences tor disabled people. Dr. Jim Vargo, Keynote Speaker, offered tips from a personal perspective on enhancing self esteem and encouraged caregivers and educators to look at the individual rather than the disability. The Employment Equity Forum which concluded the Conference on Friday morning provided a glimpse of the barriers to employment and ideas for future planning for persons with disabilities. The employers are out there, equity legislation is in place, but the responsibility and challenge for educators is to merge the two as we navigate the ’90s. Thanks to each of you who attended and participated. What a team! — Jolene Bordewick, Chairperson Ooops!
