grunt gallery and Public Dreams Society present October30 November30,1991 January 14, 1809 Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston where his itinerant actor-parents were performing. He died in Baltimore forty years later under mysterious circumstances. We have, as a culture, become less and less involved with death, preferring to leave such important rituals as the building of the coffin, the cleansing and the dressing of the body, and in many cases even the final words, to paid professionals. More and more of us (by accident, illness, or simply by coming ofan age when people close to us are dying) are being made aware of the need to create rituals that are participatory rather than passive, both for those who are leaving and those left behind. We must be prepared for death because as Poe reminds us in this story, death will come. Public Dreams has always emphasized participation of the audience in the events we create. In animating the visual installation, curated by Glenn Alteen, we go a little bit further by giving you a character to play. Welcome to The Masque of the Red Death. Please feel free to get fully involved in the proceedings this evening; after all the success of Prince Prospero's party depends entirely on the enjoyment of his guests! Paula Jardine Director A project of the size and scope of Masque was a daunting beast to take on. It started as a dream and an idea and has grown over 18 months to be what you see before you. What it has become is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because of the unconditional support this project has enjoyed from funding agencies, the artists' communities and angels from other communities. Its curse was the expansive nature of the project and the sheer gargantuan effort required for its completion. There are many people to thank for their help and effort. Here I would like to thank Public Dreams Society, my colleagues at grunt and the artists and staff who worked with us under tremendous odds. I would like to dedicate this exhibition to the memory of Gary Ross, a founding memberofgrunt and earlyparticipan tin this project. Losing him will be felt by myself and others for a long time to come. Finally my thanks to Diane Leblanc for her support. There is much to see and feel and my hope is people will be more than entertained by it.
