Jon Jessiman, Dean of Student and Instructional Services, has been nominated for the second time for the Master Teacher Award at UBC. Jon has taught at the UBC Law Faculty since 1977. The award winner will be chosen late this term. Media Re- sources students A _ Melanie Haines (producer), Dean Reca and Sheryl Rhodes are on their way toward big screen success. The students’ production, X- Posed, earned two major prizes at the BC Student Film and Video Festival this spring in Trail. Beating out over 200 entries from post-secondary and secondary institutions across the province, X- Posed received the awards of excellence for “Best Post- Secondary Documentary” and “Best Video Production Overall.” The production, which deals with the concerns and perspectives of Genera- tion X, was completed in the ad- vanced video production course. Members of the crew also included Jason Fischer and Craig McEwen. Bev Reid, of the Media Resources faculty, has just received word that another production by an advanced video production student is receiving nation-wide attention. A rock video entitled A Thousand Miles, produced by Aisling Chapman, has been play- listed on Much Music. The video is being broadcast regularly on the station. John Dowler, of Counselling, is making moves in the screenwriting business. His adaptation of the Matthew Decter play, Cyberteens in Love, has been accepted by the British Columbia Film and National Film Board New Wave program. The program will provide $150,000 in cash, facilities and services for the Media Resources students show the awards they won at B.C. Student Film and Video Festival. Screen- writing is only one of John’s inter- ests. He’s also teaching a course at Douglas College this month. The subject? UFOs and related phenom- ena such as alien abductions and crop circles. Joe Iacobellis, Manager of Athlet- ics and Recreation, represented the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Associa- tion at the Men’s National Soccer Championship in Kitchner, Ontario, Nov. 9 - 14. Among Joe’s duties was the presentation of the All Canadian Awards for 1993 to top college soccer players. One of the recipients was Cap College student Gareth Morgan. A strong attacking player and tenacious defender, Gareth has been a member of the Canadian Under 19 National Program and was on the 1991 Capilano College CCAA National Championship Team in Granby, Quebec. Four former Cap students have received a number of scholarships at the Univer- sity of Victoria. Lisa Krogh has received the Charles Howatson Scholarship and the President's Scholarship for part-time undergraduate students. Glenn Whitney has received a Daisie Thirlwall Scholarship in Violin. Lisa Wippich has received the Robert S. Evans Memorial Scholarship in Child Care, the University of Victoria Faculty Scholarship and the President's Scholar- ship. Christine Yoshikawa has received a University of Victoria Entrance Scholar- ship. Textile Arts Coordinator Ruth Scheuing has had her work selected for an international exhibition that opened in Purchase, New York (one hour from New York City) earlier this month. The exhibition, Empty Dress: Clothing as Surrogate in Con- temporary Art., will tour the U.S. and Canada for two years. Ruth’s piece is entitled “13 Men or Penelope II.” The exhibition remains in Purchase until early January. Do you know someone in the College who has done something special lately?
