October 24/97 A double celebration for double Mark Armanini, (right), composition instructor in the Bachelor of Music Transfer program, was commissioned to compose a work for double choir as part of the October 17 opening ceremonies of the Capilano College Performing Arts Theatre. Entitled When Heard in Harmonies, the text was written by Lana Robinson, director of development, Capilano College Foundation. This was the second major theatre opening performance for Mark. On May 11, his concerto for pipa, ... of Wind and Water, was performed by the Vancouver Symphony with Qui Xia He as soloist, at the opening of the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. The concert was broadcast on September 7 on the CBC’s Westcoast Performance. Mark will also be the featured composer on November 18 when the choir Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble perform a noon hour concert at the new Capilano College Performing Arts Theatre. Mark’s CD The Spirit Emerges is available for purchase through the Music Department’s office. David Vandereyk, a Bachelor of Music Transfer program faculty member who teaches piano, keyboard musicianship and music theory, is in demand as an adjudicator, clinician and examiner across Canada. During this past year alone he has adjudicated the Upper Fraser Valley Festival of the Arts, and the North Shore Music Festival. He has given workshops and masterclasses in Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Terrace, B.C. He has examined for the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, London and Montreal where he also trained junior examiners. Upcoming festivals include Kamloops, B.C. and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. David Astor (above right) has enjoyed a long and varied career as a professional singer and teacher. Among his credits are operatic appearances with the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Welsh National Opera, all in Great Britain. In North America, he has appeared with the Chicago Lyric Opera, the Milwaukee Florentine Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, the Vancouver Opera Association, the Edmonton Opera Association and the Calgary Opera Company. He has also appeared with the leading orchestras in Great Britain and Canada, and has numerous radio and television credits. Sought after as an interpreter of the Bach Evangelist roles, David also enjoys an outstanding career as a recitalist. David has been on many faculties and is currently teaching voice and lyric diction at Capilano College. In addition to this, David has a reputation as an outstanding adjudicator and masterclass teacher. Capilano College board of governors elect new chair and vice chair Naomi Yamamoto apilano College’s board of governors has elected a new chair and vice chair to serve for the coming year. Naomi Yamamoto, a board member since 1995, was elected chair. Naomi is the owner of Lasercolor Design and Printing in North Vancouver. She is chair of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce and a past director of North Shore Neighborhood House. Sylvia Sioufi, a board member since 1996, was elected vice chair. Sylvia is a research analyst with the Hospital Employees’ Union of B.C. She is active in women’s issues and is a board member of Pacific Current Magazine and past member of Palestinian and Jewish Women for Peace. “As Capilano College looks towards celebrating its 30th anniversary next year, the College board will continue to recognize the changing needs of its students and to adapt to those needs,” says Naomi. “The board will also continue to work closely with members of the College community to enable the success of its students and to serve the unique needs of our communities.” The 1997/98 board welcomes two new members: writer and analyst Shari Graydon, and Jason Lee, a specialist in intercultural relations. Returning board members include Richard Band (Vancouver resident); Severin Morin (Burnaby); Ernie Tjensvold (Gibsons); Sam Weller (Sechelt); Dal Hothi (Surrey); Barbara Howard (West Vancouver). Student representatives are Ben Williams and Lana Many Grey Horses. Laraine Hamilton returns as staff representative and Diane Blaney will represent faculty.
