Sechelt Campus Delivers Forest Renewal Training lorest Renewal B.C. investments in watershed restoration and forest worker training totalling $2.7 million were announced June 1, 1995 by Premier Mike Harcourt and Forest Renewal B.C. Chair Roger Stanyer. Forest Renewal B.C. is also investing more than $500,000 to retrain forest workers for new opportunities in the lower Sunshine Coast. Under the program, 24 workers will gain training and work experience in activities such as commercial thinning, selective logging and other stand improvement activities. “This kind of training and experience is becoming increasingly valuable as the forest sector undergoes a transition,” Stanyer said. “Worker transition training is critical to maintaining local community stability and the important contribution of the forest sector to B.C.’s economy.” The training and work experience will be delivered by the Sechelt campus of Capilano College with input from local forest companies and the Sechelt First Nation over the next two years. Forest Renewal B.C. is a partnership of government, forest companies, environment groups, communities and First Nations. Up to $400 million a year from increased stumpage and royalties paid by companies to harvest timber on Crown lands is being reinvested in the forests, forest workers and forest communities.
