V5Z 1S8 Tel.: (604) 874-9105 The new orchestra workshop creative music series For a second time, the French Cultural Centre (CCC) is pleased to receive some of Vancouver's best jazz musicians. They will be playing on Wednesdays, February the 18th and 25th; on March the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th; and on April the 1st. Starting at 8:00 P.M., the admission fees will be $4.00 for members (CCC) and $5.00 for others. 1- On opening night, wednesday, Feb 18, there will be two groups, and no admission charge: everyone is welcome!!! So, in addition to the V.A.T. (see Feb 25), Bill Clarke -trumpeter with VEGI- will feature his group, The Coast Quartet, with music in the tradition of Ornette Coleman. He will be sharing the bill with four of Vancouver's greats, Campbell Ryga, alto sax, Mike Lent, bass, and Dennis Burke, drums. 2- The Vancouver Art Trio, wednesday, Feb 25: Bruce Freedman, tenor sax; Clyde Reed, bass; Gregg Simpson, drums. The group features an approach to spontaneous improvisation which utilizes forms and thematic material fusing influences from be-bop, afro-american music and post-Coltrane free jazz. 3- The Fraser-Ryga Quartet, wednesday, Mar 4: the trombonist Hugh Fraser, leader of the VEGI Orchestra, and Campbell Ryga, master lyricist of the alto saxophone, pool their efforts together in this new and original quartet. Great new compositions delivered first class by Fraser, Ryga, Chris Nelson on bass and Buff Allen on drums. 4- Chief Feature, wednesday, Mar 11: based on original compositions of B. Freedman, Chief Feature is a marriage of traditional and "avant-garde" elements, tunes which are slightly off center yet which you can't stop humming when walking down the street. Bruce Freedman, saxophone, Ron Sanworth, guitar, Mike Lent, bass and Blaine Wikjord, drums. 5- Le trio de Philippe Lapointe, wednesday, Mar 18: Philippe Lapointe has worked as musical director for numerous CBC Radio Specials. Over the past several months, he has concentrated on composition and performing. With his group, he has appeared regularly at the Arts Club, U.B.C., The Sheraton Landmark Jazzbar and the Du Maurier International Jazz Festival of Vancouver. He will be performing at the CCC with Graham Boyle, percussionist, and Norm Fisher, bass. 6- Lunar Adventures, wednesday, Mar 25: this Vancouver musicians quartet was formed to play it's own compositions in clubs and concert settings. The Quartet's music is a synthesis of jazz, funk, Latin American, etc ... The group performed at the Du Maurier International Jazz Festival of Vancouver and recorded for CBC. It is composed of: Coat Cook, tenor sax; Ron Samworth, guitar; Clyde Reed, bass; and Gregg Simpson, drums. 7-The Paul Plimley group, wednesday, April 1: brings together three of Vancouver's most creative musicians. Combining composed music and free improvisation, this group offers a fresh approach to the piano trio tradition, sensitive and personal. Paul Plimley, piano; Clyde Reed, bass; Gregg Simpson, drums.
