Both colleagues found the meetings to be “a very rewarding experience, not only for information gained regarding directions our course offerings should possibly take, but also (and probably more important...) fora rejuvenation in... interest in higher level mathematics and its beauty.” At this conference, in addition to such esoteric topics as “Xeta Functions in Number Theory,” the two members of the Natural Sciences also discovered shared interests in “Fractal Geometry” and “Chaotic Dynamical Systems,” which they might try to team teach in the future. This interdisciplinary teaching is becoming of increasing interest in the college and fits into another surprise discovery at this conference: Writing Across the Curriculum was a topic of conversation at the Math conference. Chris Watkiss will be leading a discussion of the use of writing in disciplines such as Mathematics at the upcoming Writing Across the Curriculum Conference. Hilary Clark attended the California Staff FACULTY DEVELOPMENT GIiIULUuBERT Development Conference on March 8, followed by the National Council for Staff, Programme and Organizational Development Conference from March 9 to 10 in Costa Mesa, California. The focus of both conferences was on the importance of the on-going professional development of faculty in teaching methodology; ideas on methodology oriented PD activities and learning-theory oriented PD studies were shared. The conference recognized that faculty currency in discipline matters was an a priori concern, but also expressed its real concern over matters of faculty fatigue, stagnation and burn-out as a result of the teaching process. Many methods of revitalizing teaching were demonstrated and discussed. If you attend a conference, drop a note to me and I'll report on your reaction to your meeting in the next Informer. Jf we begin to tell each other about our activities, we'll develop “networks” of interest among our colleagues which should have a positive, PD effect. Our Achievement Resource Centre and, in particular, Dennis Wright is busy once again with a conference dealing with issues for the education of Adults with Learning Disabilities: The 5th Annual ALD Conference will be held May 9-10 at Douglas College and Dennis is the ALD Project Manager. For further information on this conference, call Dennis at ARC, local 2101.
