Tourism Management Degree Program Piloted at Capilano College Vancouver’s busy port is part of British Columbia’s thriving tourism industry. A new bachelor degree program in tourism management, announced November 4 by B.C.’s Education, Skills and Training Minister Moe Sihota, will be piloted at Capilano College. Starting in February 1997, Capilano College will be offering the degree program in partnership with the Open University of British Columbia. “For the past 10 years, Capilano College has provided provincial leadership in the post-secondary tourism area,” says John Potts, dean of Business, Human Services and International Programs at Capilano College. “The new Tourism degree extends that role for our College, making it the first institution in the province to initiate the degree program. “This will add one more applied degree to this College’s offerings and raises our profile as a provincial centre for applied studies at the degree level,” John continues. “But what is perhaps more important, we are providing another step for our Tourism and Outdoor Recreation graduates to take in their career and professional development. As holders of a Tourism Management degree, they will be prepared to play key roles in B.C.’s fastest growing industry.” The new degree program combines Internet accessibility with classroom delivery, allowing people working in the industry to complete their degree on a part-time basis without having to quit their jobs. To be eligible, applicants must have a diploma in either tourism, hospitality or outdoor recreation. They must also be working in their field of expertise. “People make a professional investment by returning to school and learning new skills and new techniques,” says Capilano College degree program convenor, Brian White. This program is a senior management program that is available to qualified professionals during the course of their life, wherever they might be living.” New Degree Available for Capilano College Business Administration Program Graduates he faculty of Management at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta and the Business Administration Department at Capilano College have developed a partnering post-diploma Bachelor of Management degree program.
