CAPILANO COLLEGE REALLY IS 11 A PLACE FOR ALL AGES 11 • •• The annual statistical reports on college enrolment have been prepared and submitted to the Mini s try of Education in Victoria. Although such compilations don't usual ly make int e resting reading, there are some rather notable f eatures of the current college population enroled in credit courses a t Capilano College. To begin with, a full third of the enrolme nt (34 %) is made up of people over the age of 30. The table gives a detailed breakdown that re veal s a spe cial interest in those over 40 t o return for more education: 30 -34 35-39 Over 40 1st year Uni versity Transfer Full-Time 1st year University Transfer Part-Time 2nd Year University Transfer Full-Time 2nd Yea r University Tr ansfe r Part-Time 10 137 8 5 7 70 5 11 30 224 10 25 1s t Year Career/Tech n ical 1st Year Career/Technical 2nd Year Caree r/Techn ic a l 2nd Yea r Career/Technical Full-Time Part-Time Full-Time Part-Ti me 22 90 12 10 13 65 7 6 44 170 10 18 TOTAL "OVER 30 11 ENROLMENT: 1, 009 Ages : ENROLMENT STATU S: = 294 + 184 + 531 With the incr easin g numbe rs of women wan ting to enter or re-ente r the workforce, it is not surprising that of thes e l ,009 students , 781 are women. In return, students whose homes are within this college district en joy the same unwritten reciprocity i n being a ble to attend courses or enrol in prograrmies at oth er B.C . educational ins tit utions--whether that be other colleges, techn i cal ins titut es or, of course, the universities. This fre edom of movement between college distri cts is allowed to accommodate students• circumstances and also to permit enrolment in special programmes wh ich are sometimes unique to a part icular institution. For example, at Capilano College the Media Resour ces Programme and the Outdoor Recreation Programme accept student s from provi nce-wide school dist ricts for just this reason. Capilano 1 s 11 open door 11 policy is therefore not unique, but forms part of the co-operative e ffort to make education acce ssible to everyone. It should be noted, however, that priority is given at registration t i me to residents o f the college district in the other courses and programmes that the college offers. The to tal enrolment for the Fall Term at Capilano is 2,983, repres enting a 6% increase in enrolment over the same period last year. Contact: Miss Valerie Giles 986 - 1911 Local 236
