_IDEA student takes top prize Work by students in the Capilano College IDEA program was showcased in a poster design competition for the Vancouver International Auto Show, held March 31 to April 8 at BC Place Stadium. “We felt this would be a welcome annual part of the Auto Show and not only provide local winning students a national showcase of their talent, but give the show a unique West Coast design component that can be proudly displayed in the new car dealer members across the province,” said B.C. Auto Association president, Glen Ringdal. Winners of the competition were announced prior to the show’s opening and second-year IDEA student, Eileen Soo, was awarded the grand prize. In addition to the recognition, Eileen received a $1,000 cash bursary and has an opportunity for a paid practicum in the arts department of a Black Press community newspaper. Originally from Vancouver, Julie is currently working as a Radio City Rockette in New York City. She is a faculty member with the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) and with the Broadway Dance Center. As with last year’s visiting instructor, Lisa Stevens, Julie is an inspiring teacher because she is a local dancer who is enjoying a successful career in musical theatre in New York. After the workshop, Julie had a question and answer session with students from all three years of our program. She shared her insight into the realities of being a Canadian working in the United States, the physical demands of being a Rockette, and the passion she has for her profession. The students were completely enthralled with Julie and the Theatre department was pleased to have our students interact with such an interesting and inspiring professional. By Dr. Robert Campbell At its April meeting, Education Council gave approval in principle to a new award, tentatively named the One to Watch award. It would recognize recent College alumni who have already made significant contributions in their fields of endeavour. Council also gave approval in principle to the Access to Practical Nursing program based on the Sunshine Coast. This program would provide laddering opportunities for graduates of the Home Support/Resident Care program to enter a Practical Nurse program with advanced credit. It will be offered in partnership with Vancouver Community College. As a result of the recent Council elections, we welcomed Cassandra Wilson (student: academic studies/ University Transfer), Nadine Bruce (support staff), and Dr. Wayne Henry (re-elected from Humanities). Council also appointed a subcommittee to create minimum requirements for degrees. The College has at least six new degree proposals in preparation. Finally, on a related note, subject to verification by the Registrar, Council endorsed the conferring of 163 bachelor degrees in our axisting degree programs. __ Send all informer submissions to:.
