August 16/96 Good with Figures and Words Essay Winner Off to Ireland 250-word essay entitled, “Why I should win a trip to Ireland,” put Iris Cunningham, staff payroll clerk, on a plane for that country on July 24. While there, Iris plans to study Irish at the Gleann Cholm Cille Scoil in Donegal, Eire. But she has an even more important date to keep. “My mother died in Vancouver in March ’95,” Iris says. “Her wish was to be buried in Ireland with her parents. I had her remains cremated and carried them to Ireland in August of that year. I searched for my grandparents’ grave for five weeks, but I could not locate iti” One week after returning home, Iris received a telephone call from her aunt in Ireland. Her cousin, who had been in Spain while she was there, had returned home and knew where the grave was. Unable to afford the return airfare for at least three years, Iris entered the first Canadian Aer Lingus Living Tradition Scholarship Essay contest with only Iris Cunningham one day to make the deadline. On December 27, she received a call from the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann Regional Board of Canada, sponsors of the contest, informing her that she was the winner. “When I was a small child,” Iris says, “T remember saying to my mother, “When everyone else is bigger and stronger than I am, how can I win?’ and my mother replied, ‘When you have God on your side, how can you lose?’ For that divine comment and for what I consider divine intervention on my behalf, I will be eternally grateful.” You’re Invited...
