WELCOME A Message From Our Sponsor Once again, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the du Maurier Ltd. International Jazz Festival Vancouver, the fifth with which we have had the privilege of being associated as sponsors. Our relationship with the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society in presenting this annual celebration of jazz in Vancouver is a valued one. Each year, we believe, the producers establish new standards of excellence for an internationally acclaimedfestival. We are proud to be a part of it, and pleased that we continue to be able to offer a substantial share of our company's arts support contributions to this very worthy contribution to our country's cultural life. We invite you to enjoy the biggest and best-ever du Maurier Ltd. International Jazz Festival. Sounds of a Changing World The past 12 months have been increasingly busy for the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society. Our year-round productions continue to reach out to a new kind of audience, one that brings a different, more diverse set of assumptions to the music than that of the traditional jazz listener. The du Maurier Ltd. International Jazz Festival Vancouver displays our strong willingness to take risks with what is deemed conventional good taste. Jazz and blues, the common denominators, form the foundation of a program that extends beyond pragmatism and shifts, chameleonlike, among the many factions of the international jazz community, bringing the audience real choices in a rich multicultural celebration. From the cheerfully accessible (the Brazilians), the humorous and playful (Eugene Chadbourne, Les Granules), and the straight-ahead (Joe Henderson, Jon Ballantyne Trio), to the rarified and esoteric (Alex Schlippenbach Trio), this Festival brings together an extremely wide array of Canadian and international artists. The sonic vocabulary of our times is being influenced by a widening range of sound images from diverse cultural sources. That Canada's creative musicians have such a 3 rapidly expanding repertoire of options open to them marks the pluralistic reality of both our society and our music. The element of change is integral to any conti"nuously developing environment; our philosophy is that change is to be embraced, not feared. The power of this Festival lies in a certain ambiguity, an exploration that moves towards a contemporary identity where imagination reigns supreme. Ken Pickering Artistic Director Ed Maling B.C. Tenor saxophonist Bob Berg has paid his dues on the way to the top. He's a veteran of road gigs with Jack Mc Duff, Horace Silver, and Cedar but he came to Walton, 10 prominence as the hot tenor on Davis's You're Under Arrest. Growing up listening to Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles and then getting turned on to Charlie Parker and John Coltrane has given Berg the scope of a truly modern player. From jazz ballads to serious funk, Berg does it all with style ... Mike Stern's reputation was established as the wailing funk/rock guitar hero of Miles's band, but his roots are as much in B.B. King and Jim Hall as in Hendrix. He can play a ballad or a swing tune, or rip through a chorus of the blues with all the fluidity of a modern jazz master. PLAZA JULY 1 June Katz Allan Holdsworth COMMODORE · JUNE 25 With characteristically British self-effacement, Holdsworth downplays the notion of being a "guitar god". His earliest significant musical inspiration came from electric jazz guitar pioneer Charlie Christian. Like Christian, les Paul, and Jimi - Hendrix before him, Holdsworth has reinvented t!le electric guitar, both in terms of how it sounds and how it is played. From his early work with noted jazz players Jean-Luc Ponty and Tony Williams's Lifetime, .and pioneering rock groups such as U.K., Soft Machine, and Bruford, to his more recent solo outings with his own band (1.0.U.), Holdsworth has consistently broken through to new musical vistas, awing the world's most noted guitarists. As a soloist, Holdsworth has few peers on the guitarrand as a bandleader and composer he takes his music to a level where few musicians may, follow. In 1986, Holdsworth introduced the synthaxe-a guitar synthesizer that allows him to create and explore· an infinite range of aural textures. Pure genius of vocal jazz ... " - Oakland Tribune ... Not since Billie Holiday has a vocalist personalized songs the way Sheila Jordan does. When Sheila was a young girl in Detroit, she'd dye her hair blonde and wear her mother's lipstick to make herself look old enough to get into the clubs to hear Charlie Parker. It didn't work. So she stood around in alleys trying to hear through the walls. Then she married Parker's pianist, Duke Jordan, "just so I could get close to Bird". The marriage didn't work out, but Charlie Parker's music is still ringing in her ears some 45 years later. With Bird as her main influence, she also pays tribute to Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Miles Davis, and the other jazz legends she grew up with. Sheila Jordan first came to prominence in the early '60s when she recorded A Portrait of Sheila (Blue Note), one of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time. Since then, she's worked with Steve Kuhn, Steve Swallow, Roswell Rudd, Carla Bley, and more. Some of her finest re corded work has been in duo with the virtuoso bassist Harvie Swartz. Sheila has forged a style that is uniquely herown. A concert with Jordan is always full of delights and surprises, as well as some of the most expressive singing you may ever hear. Extraordinary ... Leftist intellectuals denounced him as a dupe of imperialism for his use of "foreign influ ences", and the military government, afraid of a social force it could not control, jailed him and fellow Bahian Gilberto Gil, and eventually forced them into exile in England. Caetano' s oeuvre spans language, continents, and genres. His musical voice is so distinct thatthe Brazilian singer Djavan coined the term "Caetanear" in 1982 to describe it. On the 20 albums he has released since 1972, he has continued to produce songs with haunting melodies and complex harmonies. Two of his songs are included on David Byrne's Brazil Classics Vol. 1 /Be/eza Tropical, released last year. In an article for the New Yorker, Alex Shoumatoff wrote: "To the Brazilian people, he is a simple country boy from Bahia, the personification of alegria-of letting the good times roll. But his music is anything but simple. The best songs have the harmonic sophistication and introspective dreaminess of the work of Erik Satie or Bill Evans, dnd their lyrics are poetry." Veloso's new album, Estrangeiro (Elektra/ Musician), is a tour de force. It epitomizes the idiomatic eclecticism that makes Brazilian pop, at its best, one of the glories of music today. through his Jong associations with Herald Nix, the Yodells, and the Stinging Hornets.
