The three-day tournament is a showcase for some of the best semi-pro and collegiate players in North America. High-calibre cagers By Andrew Mccredie Sports Editor BIGTIME basketball usually takes a hiatus in the summer, save NBA summer league play, but this weekend at Capilano College there'll be a whole lot of jammin' goin' on. The Who's Got Game Tournament features 13 teams stocked with some of the best men players in North America, including former NBA players, current Continental Basketball Association and past NCM stars. Familiar names like Sam Cassel, George Ackles, Peter Garacci and Burt Harris will be strutting their stuff in pursuit of the $6,000 winning-team prize money. "At this level it's fun, but it Men's tourney a talent showcase stays real because these guys just love to compete," said Hamilton, a former player with the Cap College Blues and current NBA TV show producer. And while most of the teams are comprised of American players there is Canadian content in the form of the Saskatchewan Hoop Dreams and some local players. For Williams, getting Vancouver-area players is an integral part of the tourney's appeal. Many of the guys who play Canadian university ball don't really know how they stack up against their contemporaries south of the border. Once they graduate there aren't many options to continue playing, so Williams sees the Who's Got Game Tournament as a benchmark for local players. Last year's was the first tour- manent, held at the Grizzlies' Training Centre in Richmond, but according to Williams, the Sportsplex space will give the boys more room to do their thing. "The average frontline height on last year's winning team was probably 6'6", so with this more open space we're expecting the games to open up over last year." The double elimination modified tournament tips off Friday night at 6 p.m. and continues all day Saturday and Sunday. The final is set for Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5, $3 for students and $2 for kids. And for the adults in the crowd, a beer garden will be set up just outside the Sportsplex doors. Who said basketball isn't a summer game?
