C: (.) 0 Saturday, October 15 • 8 PM Vancouver East Cultural Centre "John Zorn is the Pee-Wee Herman of new music, foraging cultural artifacts and thrusting them into new sonic landscapes." - John Dilberto, Audio Since the late 70's New York born and bred composer/instrumentalist John Zorn has been one of the most innovative and controversial figures in the contemporary music world. He has created new directions for improvisation through his work with systems and sound relationships. His compositions are imbued with a sense of playfulness coupled with a reverence for sound-all the sounds of the universe. Although his background is steeped in classical, jazz and rock (Bill Laswell, Bill Frisell, George Lewis, Ray Drummond, and Yamatsuka Eye are some of the many musicians he's collaborated with over the years) Zorn has created a wealth of diverse performing opportunities for himself. Hardcore, chamber music, jazz, narrative ideas, classical music and game pieces (improvisations with a hint of order) are just a few elements of his rich musical vocabulary. He also has performed with Spy vs. Spy-a hardcore meets jazz ensemble featuring Tim Berne, Naked City, the repertory band featuring such prestigious players as Fred Frith, Wayne Horvitz, Joey Baron, Bill Frisell, and the Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet, a bebop band given to reinventing material by Herbie Nichols, Sonny Clark and Thelonious Monk. The workaholic Zorn's latest project is Masada featuring Zorn on alto sax, Dave Douglas trumpet, Greg Cohen bass, and Joey Baron drums. Imagine Jewish folk melodies filtered through free-jazz sensibilities. This could be John Zorn's most remarkable musical incarnation yet. Like Zorn's Cobra performance earlier in the year this is a show not to be missed. • zes November 3-6. 7th annual festival of jazz and improvised music. Details on Pages 4, 5&6. "Overflowing with traces of funk, be-bop, hip-hop, reggae, and straight-ahead jazz, Coleman's pieces were compelling amalgams of styles from a multiplicity of sources ... the music possesses the rare quality of appealing to mainstream and contemporary jazz followers, as well as to sophisticated pop music fans." - Los Angeles Times 5105 Alto saxophonist Steve Coleman is an uncompromising composer and a staunch individualist who has carved a unique niche for himself in spite of the narrow parameters imposed by the music industry. Never a follower of musical trends, he nonetheless manages to sound totally contemporary, blending electric instruments, rhythmic figures, and outside harmonic structures into his constantly evolving musical stew. Born in Chicago in 1957, Coleman moved to New York in 1978 and gained experience playing with big bands led by Thad Jones, Sam Rivers and Cecil Taylor. He recorded as a sideman with those leaders as well as pivotal figures like David Murray, Doug Hammond, Michael Brecker, Abbey Lincoln, Bobby Mcferrin and Branford Marsalis. In 1982 he was instrumental in founding M-BASE (Macro Basic Array of Structured Extemporisation), a fiercely creative Brooklyn self-help organization bringing together some of the best young artists in black music. Coleman-led projects taken from the collective include Five Elements and Strata Institute, ensembles that amalgamate angular improvisation and sophisticated funk rhythms. In 1983 he joined Dave Holland's band, a highly inventive quartet that electrified critics and fans alike with its thrilling group empathy. Within this group Steve's strangely melodic sax solos earned him prominence internationally. From early Parker influences (both Charlie and Maceo) he ' s developed a highly identifiable modem sound. Steve Coleman and Five Elements was conceived with a desire to play unrestricted, creative music based on the living experiences of African-American people and the African diaspora. The group first recorded in 1985 on the German-based JMT label. After two albums, Steve acquired his first major record deal in 1987 with Pangaea Records and later with RCA. The group now has six albums, The Tao of Mad Phat being the most recent. This is music for adventurous souls. As Peter Watrous of the N. Y Times wrote, "The mixture, heavy with his personality, is distinct .. . The power lies in its ambiguity, and after the oddness wears off, the music is addictive. It's unmistakable: an attempt to resist obvious uses, virtuosic." Switzerland's Koch, Schlitz and Studer are a marvel to watch and to hear. Drawing from European free jazz, Afro-American, classical contemporary, rock, metal, and ethnic musics, these three highly individualistic and gifted players construct amazing improvised soundscapes. Hans Koch, bass clarinet and saxophones, winner of numerous European musical awards, has worked with David Moss, Billy Bang, Cecil Taylor and Andrew Cyrille. Cellist Martin Schlitz has played with the Swiss Jazz Pool, The Butch Morris Octet, Wayne Horvitz and Billy Bang. Drummer Fredy Studer's playing credits include gigs with John Zorn, Dave Holland, Christy Doran, and Jack DeJohnette. Founded by Vancouver' s New Orchestra Workshop Society, the NOW Orchestra is an improvising large ensemble that provides an outlet for our city's talented composers and conceptualists. The group made waves earlier this year with their collaborative concert with the English bassist/composer Barry Guy. Guy's 50-minute suite, Witchgong Game No. 11/10, was commissioned by New Orchestra Workshop as the first in a series of interactive pieces combining the talents of Vancouver's talented improvisers and visiting artists. The piece was such a success that it was repeated at the Jazz Festival this summer, and Guy released a CD recording of it on his own MAY A record label. This collaboration with Koch, Schlitz and Studer continues the tradition. For Time Flies, Talking Pictures presents an entire programme of Kurt Weill's music. The German-born Weill, known to many as the composer of such standards as September Song and Mack The Knife, was also a composer of serious concert music and some of the greatest musical theatre scores of the 20th century, including his revolutionary prewar collaborations with Bertolt Brecht (Three Penny Opera, Seven Deadly Sins), and his works in exile with the likes of Jacques Deval, Langston Hughes, Maxwell Anderson, and Ira Gershwin. Inspired by Weill's vision of fusing popular song forms with elements of jazz and art music, Samworth has conceived On The Weill Side, a concert length suite, adapting and arranging theatre pieces and the music from Weill's orchestral scores into a slightly skewed tapestry of songs, interludes and improvised commentary. Also featured in this concert are three outstanding song stylists - Elizabeth Fisher (Animal Slaves, Murder Museum), Kate Hammett-Vaughan (Garbo's Hat), and David Roundell (Talent Hut, Murder Museum).
