Juvarya Veltkamp is passionate about solving problems—
and what better problem to solve than climate change? She
has dedicated her career to developing tools that businesses
can use to make better decisions. She helped develop the
City of Vancouver’s green economy strategy, and is currently
working with the Canada Climate Law Initiative to identify,
quantify and mitigate climate-related financial risks.

As part of an applied research project at CapU, Haluka Yagi
and her classmate Rachel Wong were hired to assist Indigenous
entrepreneur Chastity Davis-Alphonse with transitioning her
course, which looks at Canadian history through the lens of
Indigenous women, from an in-person format to an online
course. Haluka and Rachel developed a brand blueprint for
Chastity's business and created an online learning platform
that makes it possible for people across Canada to access
this transformational course.

Harrison Smith began university intending to become a nurse, but
ended up falling in love with biology because of CapU instructors
like evolutionary ecologist Tom Flower. The two recently collaborated
on a research project to assess the health of the Maplewood Flats
wetlands in North Vancouver through its invertebrates. They worked
closely on the project proposal, research goals and methodologies,
and then secured CapU funding for Harrison to conduct the fieldwork
with guidance from Tom—a truly valuable learning experience.
