The proposed affiliation will benefit the students and faculty of the Tourism departments at both institutions. Dr. Nikolina Popova, head of Sofia’s Tourism department, paid an eight-day fact-finding visit to British Columbia in May. She spent time touring the North Vancouver campus with College Tourism degree coordinator, Dr. Brian White. “Brian and Jonathan (Rouse) came to our university last year and it was then that the idea was born,” Nikolina said. “Brian was participating in Bulgaria’s current ecotourism strategy and this is how we became involved.” Bulgaria’s eco-tourism strategy includes the development of tourism destination management. The partnership with Capilano College will see the transfer of curriculum from the College to Sofia University. Faculty exchanges will also be provided. “We hope to have a longstanding relationship with Capilano College,” Nikolina added. “Your campus is beautiful and your Tourism program is exceptional.
