The Informer Page 5 November 9, 1988 SPORTSPLEX Gets Two Major Fund Infusions The Sportsplex building fund received a boost recently with the signing on of two major businesses. Our neighbour, the Coach House Inn, led the way with a donation of $10,000 toward the construction of the gymnasium. They have also agreed to award two scholarships of $250 each year. The T.C.C. Bottling Company, bottlers of Coca Cola, have offered to donate $70,000 to the Sportsplex, and they will also be setting up a scholarship fund. Several North Shore doctors, including our own Dr. Bill Mackie, will be assisting us in our fundraising efforts, by writing to their colleagues encouraging their support of the Sportsplex campaign. We would like to thank all our friends in the community for their generous support. Flu Shots: yes or no? Flu is a term commonly used to describe anything from a minor head cold and fatigue, to a stomach infection, but the true influenza is usually a self-limiting febrile illness lasting from a few days to a couple of weeks. Symptoms include sore throat, fever, chills, headache, dry cough, runny nose, and muscle and joint pains. Antibiotics do not help since they are ineffective against a viral illness, but may be used for pneumonia, which sometimes follows the flu as a serious complication. Who needs or should get an annual flu shot? * persons over 65 * adults with chronic illnesses * children with chronic lung disorders * residents and personnel of nursing homes and chronic care facilities Immunization is best done at the beginning of the flu season, October and early November, and is effective against the current year’s circulating influenza strain. Flu shots do not provide protection against the common cold. For further information, check with your family doctor or call Health Services at 2964. CAPILANO COLLEGE HEALTH SERVICES (2964) Planting Colour Thanks to the Landscape Horticulture students and the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Centre, we can look forward to a colourful spring. Over 7,000 bulbs, including crocus, daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, snowdrops, and irises were planted around the campus over the past weeks, 2,000 of them donated by the Netherlands group. These were flown to the College from Toronto as part of an overall promotion of Dutch bulbs. Those with bulb know-how plant as early as possible, but Les Koskitalo says it’s still not too late to slip in some before before December 1. “If you can’t plant right away,” he says, “store them cool and dry. They will start to sprout if too warm and go moldy if wet." For those of us suffering through the dark November days, placing a few promises of colour in our gardens can be a good way to offset the gloom. Men's Soccer Team Goes to Nationals Our men's soccer team won the B.C. College Athletic Associaton provincial championship on the weekend, defeating B.C.I.T. 1-0 in the finals. The winning goal was made by Mario Montagliani. The team's success means they will represent the province in the National Championships November 10 - 12 in Nanaimo. Their first game, against Nova Scotia, is at 2 p.m. November 10 in the Caledonia Stadium in Nanaimo. Three players made the All-Conference team. They are: Ray Pang, Jason Charles, and Rod Schenoni, who was also named Most Valuable Player for the league. Two players were named to the second All Star team, Robert Reed and Randy Celebrini. Hold that Line Sharon Miletic (Business Management) has a good piece of advice about internal telephone calls. If you are making a call to an office which may have the phone on call forward, be sure to let it ring at least eight times. It takes four rings before the call is forwarded, and may take another four before busy staff can get to the phone.
