December 14/94 he Lt. Governor’s Silver Medal for Vocational Studies was presented on Nov. 3 at Capilano College’s Fall Graduation ceremonies. Yvonne Rice, this year’s recipient, is married and a mother of two teenagers. She enrolled last year in the College’s 10- month Office Technology Financial Option Program as part of her plan to rejoin the workforce. Her instructors said he one, the only Capilano College Christmas Party on Friday, December 2, was an enormous success. An incredible dessert table wowed the guests who brought their own home-made goodies to line the pot luck dinner table. The food selection spanned the globe, from oriental noodle salad, to spanakapita, nigiri sushi, satay, chili, loads of veggies, salads and other delicious dishes. Winners of the three grand prizes for the first annual Capilano College Employees’ Lottery were: Karen LeQuyere, department assistant for Supply and Services, winner of the trip for two to Hawaii; the Day Care Centre’s Adrienne Argent, who will be spending a weekend with a guest at Whistler; and Graham Hughes, Business Administration faculty member, who will be sharing a dinner for two at Delilah’s Medal winner Yvonne Rice is surrounded by family and friends. Mother of Two Wins Lt. Governor's Silver Medal that in addition to her excellent scholastic achievement, Yvonne freely assisted and guided her classmates. Her “demonstrated unselfishness and generosity of spirit” was recognized in front of 1,000 audience members attending the fall ceremonies in the Sportsplex. Yvonne is currently employed at Ballard Power Systems in North Vancouver where she recently completed her practicum. O And the Winners Are... Restaurant. Media Production’s Dianella Knight won the grand door prize; a weekend for two at Courtenay’s Westerley Hotel. Approximately $800 was raised for the Union Gospel Mission, while the new College theatre will benefit from approximately $4,000 raised from lottery ticket sales. The Vancouver Food Bank will also receive a generous donation of non- perishable food items. Congratulations to the Christmas Party committee members who did a terrific job. Graham Coates Student Remembered Through scholarship he family and friends of Graham Coates have established a fund with the Capilano College Foundation to be known as the Graham Coates Memorial Athletic Scholarship. The interest earned annually from the fund will be used to provide one or more scholarships for soccer players enrolled at Capilano College. Qualifying students must have successfully participated in the Capilano College Varsity soccer program while enrolled in a minimum of nine credits of instruction; volunteer in the amateur soccer program within B.C.; demonstrate a high standard of sportsmanship; and, be dedicated to the sport of soccer. Graham attended the College between 1981 and 1983, taking general academic courses. He was goalkeeper for the B.C. Select Soccer Team and was considered to be one of the top 20 players in the province. His life ended suddenly in 1991 when he died of cardiac arrest. All donations to the Scholarship will be eligible for matching on an ongoing basis. Individuals or organizations can contribute to the fund at any time.
