Submitted by Brett McGillivray — Several weeks ago, I received a phone message from the provincial Electoral Boundary Commission asking me if I would give them a workshop on boundaries. The | Geography instructor, Brett McGillivray, has two new releases out. instruc ne Submitted by Lee Ederer College Theatre instructor, Stephen Atkins, has been selected to work as intern director with the prestigious Brisbane, Australia-based physical theatre company, Zen Zen Zo. Applicants worldwide vied for the opening, which offers the opportunity to study leading-edge performance training, create new works and co-direct the main production for the upcoming season. Stephen will be joining the company in January for a seven-month stint. “T was happy enough to have been selected to work and train with the company,” Stephen said. “To have been given the only director's position was incredibly exciting.” Stephen Atkins The practical side of geography commission had been consulting my book Geography of British Columbia: People and Landscapes in Transition (UBC Press, 2005). This three-member commission was formed by the provincial government late in 2005 with a mandate to examine the boundaries of the existing 79 electoral districts in terms of representation-by- population. Because of population changes, it also has the mandate to jncrease the number of electoral districts to 85. Another rather unique mandate of the commission is to come up with single transferable vote (STV) boundaries. Here, MLA constituencies would be combined from two to seven. These boundaries present another set of challenges. If anyone is interested in the commission, its time lines, submissions, etc., please visit its website at www.bc-ebc.ca. | It’s Down Under for Stephen Atkins Stephen has been an instructor at Capilano College for the past 16 years teaching Voice, Physical Theatre, Acting, Improvisation and Theatre History. While in Australia, he will be studying physical theatre techniques based on Viewpoints, created by Anne Bogart and Tina Landau of Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, and SITI in Saratoga, New York. Another major component of the training will include Butoh and Tadashi Suzuki method. Since last year’s publication of Viewpoints, these developments have become more widespread and are becoming one of the main pillars of performer training in North America and internationally. My book, which is being used fairly extensively throughout B.C’s colleges and universities, tells the stories about the settlement and development process of this province. These are some of the many considerations that the commission needs to consider as they search for natural boundaries, effective representation, and where to draw the boundaries for high population urban areas, or conversely, low population rural, remote and large regions. It is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate one of the many practical sides of geography. In addition, I have also recently published a second book of the geography of Canada entitled: Canada: A Nation of Regions. (Oxford University Press, 2006).
