. --- GREETINGS FROM du Maurier Ltd. On behalf of du Maurier Ltd. I am pleased to welcome you to the ninth annual du Maurier Ltd. International Jazz Festival Vancouver. Over the years this festival has grown in both size and reputation, and is now recognized internationally as one of the most entertaining and innovative music festivals in the world. The board and staff of the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society deserve special recognition for their years of dedication to producing and promoting innovation and excellence in programming. Their contribution continues to play a significant role in the development of the jazz scene in Canada. Congratulations as well to the more than 800 musicians performing at this year's festival , and to the technicians and the hundreds of volunteers who have worked so very hard to make this event a tremendous success. I invite you to enjoy and experience the myriad of concerts and events over the next ten days as the festival brings the world of jazz to Vancouver. ~-~-~<=t\' Jean-Paul Blais President, du Maurier Ltd. KEVIN P. REILLY DE.SIGN & PRODUCTION VERTEX DE.SIGN INC. "Your festival is justly considered by everyone to be one of the greatest in the world today." - Steve Lacy This flattering accolade from Mr. Lacy is one we' ve worked very hard to earn over the past decade. As contemporary society moves towards the end of the century, it's more necessary than ever to push past established boundaries, toJrovide fertile terrain for the communication, interaction, an dissemination of artists' collective imaginings. This festival has an international reputation for pushing the creative envelope. It's our intention to present one of the world's truly distinctive musical events. In this spirit, this year' s festival will include a performance poetry/ spoken word component during Jazz at the Plaza on the final weekend. Several performances will feature an improvised interface of music and word, and we thank Kedrick James of the Atomik House of Poetry for partnering this program. The festival ' s role in an expanded global musical network continues to grow. By providing opportunities for home-grown musicians to interact with some of the most significant international artists we aim ta promote and internationalize creative improvised music within Canada and throughout the world. This year we've also initiated tours for some of the most inventive and original creative artists from Europe; performers such as the ICP Orchestra, Louis Sclavis,Steve Arguelles, News From the Shed, MYTHA, Day and Taxi, and Trevor Watts. The Canadian jazz festival circuit provides most of the public opportunities for hearing Europe' s best. Unfortunately, there are few chances to play south of the border. In fact, outside of Europe and Japan, many of America's leading-edge artists also look north for employment. You'll hear many of them at this year's festival. Canada's jazz festivals are internationally recognized as the premier cooperative model for touring jazz artists. We're proud to work with Westcan Jazz and festivals further east to develop one of the most sophisticated and adventurous festival circuits anywhere. But without the committment and dedication of the amazing staff and volunteers of the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, none of this would be possible. A heartfelt thanks to all of you (particularly Bob, John, Jeff, and Kate). This team is definitely a winner! Welcome to the 9th Annual du Maurier Ltd. Now, with his new band, Bob has returned to the smokin' and hard-blowing mainstream jazz that has always been his first love. Says Berg, "Now, ii it swings, I' m happy. I like to listen for that quality in music. Number one to me is if it feels good. Shirley Horn- vocalist and pianist-belongs in the pantheon of great American singers which includes Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, and Betty Carter. She is a pure jazz artist who brings a mastery of nuance, phrasing, drama, and emotion to the songs she sings. Jon Pareles of the New York Times observed, "Songs are lucky when Shirley chooses them." Too long a secret pleasure of her native Washington, D.C., Shirley is finally being acknowleged as a national musical treasure. Since 1988 her career has soared. She followed her chart topping, Verve recording You Won't Forget Me (featuring Wynton and Branford Marsalis and Shirley's earliest fan, Miles Davis) with another smash hit. The Grammy Award winning Here's To life: Shirley Horn with Strings was produced and arranged by Johnny Mandel, and it overwhelmed critics and fans worldwide. "- Stereo Review Keila has been called "the golden Voice of Africa" and "one of the world's greatest soul singers." The fact that he comes from Mali in West Africa, where voices are treasured as instruments for carrying the history of the people, makes Salif's status exceptional. And his voice is outstanding by any standard; its high wailing tone and long mournful notes immediately identify him with the Islamic traditions of his home country. Sal if' s life story, too, is a triumph over seemingly rigid factors; being born albino and belonging to a noble family whose predetermined lifeplan did not include singing. In Mali, a singer's career is usually determined by one's birth into a family of griots. As a child, Salif would listen as griots visited his family, to sing praises and tell of local news and that triggered something in him. He told the British magazine Folk Roots, that bad eyesight blocked him from . teacher-training and suggested to him a career as a singer. In order to fulfill that ambition, Salif had to leave his family and settle in Bamako, the capital of Mali. There he struggled to survive as a singer and musician until, in 1970, he joined the government-sponsored Rail band which played in the bar of Bamako Station. Today, Salif Keila, along with Youssou N'Dour, is established as one of Africa 's leading international artists. His most recent releases on Mango Records, Ko-yon and Amen, are musically awe-inspiring and confirm Keita as an artist of world stature. Pharaoh Sanders, with his big and deep, heat-radiating tone, was easily one of the most creative saxophonists on the 1960s jazz scene. He toured and recorded with John Coltrane, the supreme voice of jazz at that time. After Coltrane's death, Pharaoh recorded for Impulse Records (Tauhid, Karma, Jewels of Thought). These influential albums blended jazz with Eastern strains. By the late '70s and through the 1980s, Sanders' career began to evolve and his playing incorporated gorgeous ballads with spirited bop, traditional jazz, and blues. In the words of jazz writer Philip Elwood , "It was still Sanders, but in some ways (after his adventures into the great beyond), he had come back to earth." Pharaoh's recent recordings for Timeless and Theresa are notable for their beautiful romanticism and rich sensuality. His reading of the jazz standard, My One and Only Love, is absolutely breathtaking. Sanders feels the music deeply, from the inside, and he is arguably the most authentic and thoughtful interpreter of this material on the scene today.
