Mailbox This letter was sent to Graham Forst, English instructor, who regularly involves his students in field trips to theatres such as the Vancouver Playhouse. It has been reprinted with permission of the sender. Dear Graham: Artistic Director Guy Sprung has asked me to thank you on behalf of The Playhouse for your active support of theatre in general and the company in particular. Canadian theatre will only ever be as good as its audience demands, and the development of a discerning audience is imperative to its continued development as an instrument of human expression. Capilano College stands as an example to all educational institutes for its extra efforts to ensure its students are graduated not only with the knowledge they expect to attain, but the ability to apply the knowledge with good judgement. | am saddened by the seeming intent of so many education policies to limit human potential by directing students to develop only analytical skills; the need to help our young people to see the world in larger terms in order that they might challenge— and improve—the normative order is so important not only for their development, but for the continued progress of our society. Your efforts to instill in your students a critical facility by helping them find the value beyond entertainment in live theatre benefits us all. | want you to know that your dedication inspires the Playhouse to produce challenging and enlightening drama. Yours truly, Kate Poole Vancouver Playhouse Obasan author reads at SFU Joy Kogawa, author of Obasan, The Splintered Moon, A Choice of Dreams, and Jericho Road will be reading from her new novel on Wednesday, November 25 at 4:30 pm in the Images Theatre at SFU.
