Be a Hero—Give the Gift of Blood The Canadian Red Cross Society is hoping to collect 105 units of blood at the blood donor clinic at Capilano College on Thursday, Feb. 7. The clinic, located in the N Building Student Lounge, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Red Cross must collect 700 units of blood every business day to meet the needs of patients throughout British Columbia. Every 20 seconds, someone in Canada needs a blood transfusion, and it is estimated that 60 per cent of Canadians will require a transfusion in their lifetime. Thanks to volunteer blood donors, Canadians receive all the blood they need free of charge—but the Red Cross needs more donors. Of the estimated 35 per cent of Canadians eligible to donate, less than six per cent actually do. Donating blood is a simple and safe procedure that takes about an hour, with a lifesaving result. If you are in good health, 17 years of age or older, weigh more than 100 pounds and are not on any medication, you are probably eligible to donate blood. If you are unsure of your eligibility, call the Red Cross Nursing Department at 879-7551. Be sure to have a substantial meal within four hours prior to donating. Ministry Brief Former Capilano College President Paul Gallagher has been chosen to guide a major adult human resource development project. “Mr. Gallagher’s broad experience and personal commitment to post-secondary education make him the ideal choice for the project,” said Bruce Strachan, Advanced Education, Training and Technology Minister. The ministry appointed Gallagher to the position for two years. The project will promote discussion between businesses, the educational system and labor to determine the best ways to train people for jobs that help B.C.’s economy.
