fter being out of school for 27 years, Mick Moran found himself back in the classroom again when a shoulder injury ended his career with Bekins Moving and Storage. Enrolling in the Adult Basic Education program at Capilano College’s Squamish campus, Moran took math and English courses with mostly younger students. “T had to work harder than the younger ones, but I felt very comfortable because of the relaxed atmosphere,” remarked Moran, who was born in Ireland and raised in England. “ABE was a good Transfer Day oom 148 in the Cedar building was filled to overflowing on February 14 as more than 100 students gathered to hear presentations from UBC, SFU, UNBC and BCIT advising staff. The presentations were one part of the Post Secondary Transfer Day organized by the Capilano College Advising Centre. They will assist students in making a successful transition from Capilano College to the transfer institution of their choice. The students, many of whom are planning to transfer from Capilano College this year, received guidance from the institutional representatives on how to make a successful and efficient transition from the College. Application procedures, fees and financial aid were just some of the introduction to studying again.” With an A and two B-pluses in his three College courses, Moran qualified for the transportation logistics program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, where, he says, “Reality has kicked me squarely in the teeth. Since September I’ve been taking nine courses — 30 hours a week.” This is a continuation of a series of articles written by Vern Giesbrecht, Adult Basic Education instructor at Capilano College’s Squamish and Sechelt campuses. They appeared in the Squamish Chief newspaper last December. O More than 200 Students Participate in Post Secondary topics covered in the first half of the one and one half hour long presentation. The second half was taken up with a question and answer period. For the rest of the day, Capilano College students were given an opportunity to meet one-to-one with the university and institute advisors. By the end of the day, the advisors had assisted more than 200 students to prepare for transfer. The Advising Centre’s Jeri Krogseth, organizer of the day’s events, was pleased with the presentations and most impressed with the students’ questions. “They obviously took time to prepare,” Jeri remarked. O Working Towards a Safer Campus y now, everyone should have : received a green two-page insert in their end of January pay envelope and completed and returned the Capilano College campus personal safety survey. The survey was the first step of an in-depth study of the campus being undertaken by the Safer Campuses Initiative Committee on Safety and Security. This committee was formed as a joint recommendation of the Sexual Harassment and Health and Safety committees and dove-tailed nicely with a recent announcement by the Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour to make available to all public post-secondary institutions in B.C. a sum of money to develop and implement plans to make campuses safer. The next step will be the completion of a safety audit. The campus has been divided into 12 sections which will be visited by teams to identify areas of concern. Volunteers are still needed to complete this audit. If you are interested and can spare an hour, please call Health Services at local 2964. O
