THESNFORMER PAGE 8 SEPTEMBER 6, 1989 FACULTY DEVELOPMENT B Y REID The Faculty Development Committee is in operation once again, and plans are afoot fora number of projects this year. The budget of the Committee has been increased from last year’s original funding level to the amount actually spent last year (including the special overrun allowed for additional conference grants); this is very good news, indeed. The release time for the Chairperson has also been increased to two sections in the fall term. We are pleased that the President and Administration have stood by their commitment to fund professional development as a college priority. The Committee is in the process of defining its membership for 1989/90. The CCFA will appoint two members to the Committee and each Division of the College will appoint two members. (At the Annual General Meeting of the CCFA, the existing Committee members were ratified as CCFA members for this year.) The makeup of this year’s Committee will be announced in the next Informer, by which time the Committee will have met. The Faculty Yellow Pages are now published and each faculty member should receive one by the first day of classes. If you don’t, please check with your Divisional Assistant. The Grant Programme will continue this year and information will be circulated soon in a brochure for the Programme. Some monies have been allocated by the Committee to fund retroactively conferences attended this summer; if you went to such a conference please save your receipts and plan to submit an application to this programme. Funds toward conference expenses and PD grants for the upcoming year will also be granted in the fall and spring terms: watch for the Faculty Development brochure. The Writing-Across-the-Curriculum Project continues from its encouraging start last spring. An information memo has been sent to everyone by Rosemary Coupe, outlining the activities planned for this fall. The Writing Centre has been somewhat expanded and is now in an area of Humanities as you enter the door of H404. Please drop by and see what the Centre can offer you and your students. The two major new thrusts for 1989/90 are Faculty Exchange and the Definition of Professional Development. GILBERT An introductory meeting to present the Committee’s Working Paper on a definition of Professional Development will be held Thursday, September 14 from 12:30-2:30 in Al17. We very much hope a large number of faculty will attend so that we can begin to air this important discussion among all areas of the college. Coordinators are asked to hold discussions in each area after this meeting and to report comments to Reid Gilbert. The definition of PD is a central concern of all of us, so please give some thought to this working paper. An information meeting on Faculty Exchange will be held in early October. The college has joined a consortium for exchange which will act as a brokerage centre, allowing an exciting variety of exchanges to take place: traditional one-to-one exchanges, three-way exchanges, visiting positions where “1\2” an exchange takes place without the other colleague moving, and so on. The BC system has joined this group, so local and inter-BC exchanges can take place, as well as exchanges to the USA. And, of considerable interest, this consortium sponsors exchanges of Administration and Staff as well as faculty—this is a chance for all of us. If you are immediately interested, call Reid at 2414. If you might be interested, come to the information meeting. Exchange offers a marvelous chance to renew oneself and gather new perspectives; I know, because I’ve been on one! There are a number of conferences announced; information can be obtained from the Faculty: Development File in the library; see the circulation desk staff. See you at the Definition meeting on September 14.
