March 13, 1972 FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES The first scholarships and bursaries of the Capilano College Foundation have been awarded to students of the College. Six $100 scholarships were awarded for first semester academic achievement to ...full-time students in first year. ...Twelve $50 bursaries were also awarded to first year students who demonstrated need as well as academic standing. CRAYFISH RESEARCH Under the stimulation of Keith Wade a group of Capilano College biology students have submitted an OFY application for funds to conduct an on- going summer study of the breeding grounds of Crayfish in B.C. Dr. Wade says the application has the active support of the Federal Fisheries department and the Nanaimo Marine Biology Station. The project would employ about 10 2nd year biology students of the College to survey B.C. coastal rivers for the elusive fish. Part of the objective of the study would be to determine whether sufficient crayfish exist foracommercial industry in this province. March 20, 1972 BILL TERRY SPEAKS TO ENGLISH 151 One of Vancouver's more active environmentalists and communication men, Bill Terry of the CBC, spoke to Crawford Kilian's English 151 class last Thursday. Terry, whois at the forefront of the campaign to keep the bridge open for bicycles, was able to give the class some insights into how to mount a Campaign to communicate a problem to the people. TWO NEW MEMBERS APPOINTED TO COUNCIL The Minister of Education has recently agreed to the expansion of the Council to include two members from each School Board. The extra members appointed from West Vancouver and North Vancouver Boards have been George Suart (Vice- President, Administration at SFU) and Gerry Bonham (City of Vancouver Medical Health Officer) respectively. The additional member from Howe Sound is Mr. T.B.M. "Slim" Fouberg. March 27, 1972 GEOGRAPHY DEPT. ASKED TO COORDINATE The College Geography Department has been asked by Dr. Walter Hardwick of UBC to coordinate the North Shore and West End section of the Greater Vancouver Urban Study. This large study is being financed by the federal Department of Urban Affairs. The aim of the study is to determine public attitude towards future urban development in the metropolitan area. Brian White's urban geography class will conduct a pilot project for a larger summer questionnaire. Housewives from the North Shore will also be involved. ARMED. FORCES RECRUITING OFFICER HERE Gary Siegrist informs us that Captain Shamber, a military career counsellor of the Canadian Armed Forces, will be at the College on Thursday, April 6 at 12:30.
