Best wishes to one and all for another outstanding Jazz Festival. ~~ Henry Dayday J JAZZ SIZZLES AND SOARS! azz takes the spotlight once again when the THIRD ANNUAL 1989 SASKATCHEWAN JAZZ FESTIVAL "sizzles and soars" in Downtown Saskatoon, Thursday, June 29 through Monday, July 3. Over 125 international and national artists, and an equal number of professional and amateur musicians from Saskatchewan, will perform jazz of all styles in a variety of paid and free events. At last year's Jazz Festival some 12,500 attendees, including over 25% from outside Saskatoon, sampled or immersed themselves in the diverse and exciting sounds of jazz-America's contribution to world culture. The 1989 Festival continues a "mainstream" focus, the heart of jazz to a major segment of our music community; but this year incorporates a greater measure of both its roots, including New Orleans, Gospel, Blues and Swing, and its more contemporary styles of Salsa, Fusion and Free Form. Again, the Society is most grateful for the support of our sponsors and donors, and our volunteers-the "life·blood" of the Festival. COME AND JOIN US AT THE SASKATCHEWAN JAZZ FESTIVALJUNE 29 TO JULY 3- AS "JAZZ SIZZLES AND SOARS"! PERRY QUARTET --;~.. CENTENNIAL AUDITORIUM HALL, 8 PM ' THE PAUL PERRY ORCHESTRA REUNION P AUL GULOIEN, known professionally as PAUL.PERRY, had a significant impact on jazz in Canada. His jazz-influenced dance bands, which played Saskatchewan and Alberta during the 40's to early 60's, were literally training grounds for many top Canadian jazz players. The evening 'recreates' the sounds which provided so many hours of listening and dancing pleasure, and 'celebrates' the man and his music with former sidemen, family and friends. Born in Wadena, PAUL GULOIEN and brothers, Edward, Howard and Jim, all pursued careers as dance-band saxophonists, and sister Hazel Ann a concert singer. The PERRY ORCHESTRA got its big start in Saskatoon, played Kenosee Lake, Regina's Trianon Ballroom and many other dance spots of the day, but it was the summers at Varsity Hall, Sylvan Lake, Alberta, where much of their success was realized. . .. ~~ ..i .,· ~ .._; . LOOSE TUBES F CLIMAX JAZZ BAND plus RIVERSIDE JAZZ BAND F irst-ever reunion of RIVERSIDE JAZZ BAND, a popular Saskatoon "!rad" group which performed at Society Jazznites and Saskatoon and Regina jazz spots some eight years back. Led by CHARLES WRIGHT on clarinet, GERRY BOEY on trumpet, Torontonian RAY BATTEN on trombone, JIM MARSH from Vancouver on banjo, MIKE McCAWLEY from Windsor on tuba, and BILL WATSON on drums. An exciting event, performing together again after so many years and, opening for Climax, whom Charles has sat in with on a number of occasions. It will also be a Festival highlight for their families and many local friends, as the Saskatoon jazz scene will lose Charles Wright to Vancouver this summer. 16 ormed in 1984, LOOSE TUBES gained a reputation in the United Kingdom, then Europe and more recently, North America, as an important new addition to the big band arena. Legendary Teo Macera, producer for Ellington, Mingus and Davis, and TUBES' new album, likened their sound to Ellington. The music echoes the jazz heritage, the electric sounds of funk, the rhythms of reggae and salsa, and the melodies and harmonies of Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. The result is a fresh, dazzling, witty, inventive, and highly polished musical feast, rich in variety and served in a unique and "now" LOOSE TUBES style. The versatile 22-piece band may at times follow the standard 5 saxes, 4 trombones, 5 trumpets and 4 rhythm, but with extra brass, percussion and doubling, the TUBES are usually in extended form. Further unique qualities are the bands circular stage set-up and their co-operative direction. plus BOB MOYER BIG BAND T he 18-piece BIG .BAND directed by pianist BOB MOYER features singer PAT STEEL and Regina's finest jazz musicians, including altoist ART BRITTON, trumpeters BARRY REDFORD and ED LEWIS, trombonist JORDAN SCHMOK, bassist KEN COFFEY, drummer TED WARREN and tenorist SHANNON FEHR. Throughout the years, jazz has had a major influence on the popular music of the day, from "tin pan alley" to the latest "rock" music. Today jazz is studied, performed and enjoyed throughout the world as evidenced by the hundreds of "jazz festivals" held internationally each year. The U.S. Congress recently passed a resolution officially recognizing JAZZ as a significant part of America's culture and heritage. The HISTORY OF JAZZ and BEBOP AND BEYOND are two programs developed by the members of JAZFX, of the JAZZ FACULTY of ST. FRANCIS XAVIER UNIVERSITY, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, to help educate audiences about the nature, roots and evolution of "jazz". Suitable for all ages, listeners as well as players, the two 45-minute programs combine informative narrations and representative performances to provide an illuminating and enjoyable experience for both novice listeners and jazz buffs alike. The first part covers the "beginnings of jass" through ragtime, dixieland, swing and big bands, while the second takes the audience from Charlie Parker's innovations through Miles, Coltrane, ECM music, fusion and today. Sharing the talking and demonstration duties are: GENE SMITH - trombone, ANDREW WEINZLER - sax, BRUCE DUDLEY piano, JOHN MCLEAN - guitar, SKIP BECKWITH - bass and TERRY O'MAHONEY - drums.
