The Informer Page 11 December 12, 1988 New Personnel Director Hired Doug Jardine is pleased to announce that Garry Gatley will begin as our new Director of Personnel January 3. Garry was chosen out of a field of 120 applicants. The former Coordinator, Combined Units of O.T.E.U. Local 378 brings 14 years of experience in labour relations and personnel functions to his new position. A large portion of his experience is in the areas of collective agreement negotiation (he has worked on the negotiation and servicing of 17 collective agreements, including Cap’s), and he is conversant with grievance handling, presentation of arbitrations, development, implementation, and negotiation of job evaluation systems. Before moving to the Coordinator position in the O.T.E.U., Garry served for two years as Communications and Education Officer. Garry prides himself on his problem-solving skills and abilities as a communicator and looks forward to working in the College environment. His work on our collective agreement has already made him familiar with the Personnel Department, members of the administrative and management groups, and the O.T.E.U. membership. Commonwealth Distance Education Link The first Commonwealth organization to be headquartered outside Great Britain opened in Vancouver November 14. The Commonwealth of Learning is intended to provide a distance education network among Commonwealth educational institutions. The decision to establish the centre here was made last October at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Vancouver. “The organization will help meet a common need,” said Stan Hagen, Minister of Advanced Education and Job Training. “It will increase access to advanced education for those living far away from the centers of learning.” Contributions to the Commonwealth of Learning have been made by Canada, Australia, Britain, Barbados, Botswana, Brunei Darssalam, India, Nigeria, Malta, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe. The Province of B.C. is committing $5 million over the next five years to support the organization. Coach House Face-Lift The Sportsplex Fundraisers, who recently received a generous donation of $10,000 from the neighbouring Coach House Inn, say drop by and let Dom, the manager, know you're from the College. Apparently the Inn has refurbished its facilities and is now suitable for Christmas parties or providing accommodation for College guests. Check it out. A Space Prospectus to 2001 The following article is an abbreviated version of Alan Smith’s “Outline of Some of the Major Space Needs at Lynnmour’” which is now under discussion. For the complete outline, contact Alan Smith (2926), your PEC representative, or your coordinator/administrator. Background: Early in November, I began discussions amongst the Management, the DACs, and PEC (Physical Environment Committee, former PPC) on the major space needs at our Lynnmour core campus. The context of this discussion is the preparation of a Space Prospectus to present to the Ministry. This Prospectus will be a list of our major space and facility needs to 2001 and a hard-hitting case to support the requests. We have been aided in the preparation of the Prospectus to date, by a space consultant. The Context: Anyone interested in discussing the issues with PEC is most welcome to attend the January 12 meeting in A112 at 4:30 p.m. and/or talk to your PEC representatives: Karen Vickars and Nigel Amon for faculty, Doreen Cottrell and Betty Merrall for staff, and Aaron Vidaver and Graham Shuley for students. Ken Hughes and myself are the administrative reps. The PEC will be reviewing these major space needs and making recommendations to the President. Following the presentation of the Prospectus to the Ministry in February, we will continue to discuss where the planned facility expansion will go and optimum size (in student numbers). To help this discussion, there will be some preliminary site planning by an architect. The tentative list of major space needs include: 1. General Classrooms 2. Laboratories 3. Library and Quiet Study Space 4. Other Instructional Student Services spaces. 5. Student Lounge and Activity Space 6. Cafeteria Seating 7. Faculty Offices and Support Areas 8. Theatre 9. Replacement of Portable Buildings (For more detailed information, contact your PEC rep.) Christmas Hamper Time Please help us make Christmas a happier time for the Buckle family, Mum, Stacy 15, Clayton 13, Dallas 2, and Cody 1. We would appreciate your support towards getting them a turkey and Christmas tree. Please send your donations to Daycare. —Janet McDonald (2950) She Still Misses Us Anne Beare, former manager of the South Cafeteria, sent a warm thank you for the farewell gift and party held in her honour in October. She writes: Thank you for being so thoughtful. I really appreciated it. I’ve had 11-1/2 wonderful years. I really miss everyone. All the best to all of you.— Anne
