Lower the temperature of your hot water tank. Use natural fertilizer for gardening. Reuse glass or plastic containers to store leftovers. Buy soft drinks in returnable bottles or reusable cans. Turn off lights, heaters and fans when they’re not needed. Use rechargeable batteries. Turn the water off while brushing your teeth. Don’t buy over-packaged foods. Organize a car pool. More suggestions from the Consumers’ Association of Canada Substitue Latex or water-based paints for enamel or oil-based paints. Cedar chips, newspapers, lavendar flowers for mothballs. Dry comstarch, sprinkled on, then vacuumed for rug/upholstery cleaners. 1 part lemon juice, 2 parts vegetable oil for floor/furniture polish. Old dishwasher or bar soap and water sprayed on leaves and rinsed off for house plant insecticide. 1/2 cup borax in 1 gallon water for household disinfectants. 2 to 5 tablespoons white vinegar in 2 cups water for window cleaners. North Shore's Poor Co-Pro. You probably haven’t heard of it. The North Shore Co-operative Projects Society for the low income and handicapped is a small organization that has been quietly serving the poor of the North Shore for almost 20 years. They’ve decided to make a little more noise. An average of 500 people use their services every month for sheltered work opportunities, emergency services, a free clothing exchange and food bank, and referral and advocacy. Co-Pro relies on a small community grant from the Ministry of Social Services and Housing and the support of the community. It is based on a formula that compares your height in metres with weight in kilograms and indicates whether your size Is in the low, moderate or high risk zone for developing health problems. Within the “healthy” range there are many weights for your height that are acceptable. The BMI has been adapted by a Canadian Expert Group on weight standards set up by Health and Welfare Canada and Is reliable, accurate and valid In considering a wider range of acceptable shapes and sizes that are healthy, as compared to previous standards.
